DescriptionVacancies are in the Fire Department. Under close supervision, performs a variety of support functions in the day-to-day operations of the Fire Department while preparing to become a Firefighter candidate. Assists and supports any division of the Department, including but not limited to, Administration, Fire Marshal's Office, and the Fire Academy. Maintains Fire Department facilities and grounds. Delivers equipment and assists with special events and community functions; picks up and delivers supplies and runs departmental errands. Assists Training Division personnel with rehabilitation efforts and incident support; assists Special Services Unit personnel with relocation of fire victims. Assists with training classes and drills; prepares visual aids; assists or prepares power point presentations, video and audio productions; videotapes fire classes and other training; and assists with public education presentations. Performs data entry into computer terminal and verifies accuracy of input; operates a variety of office equipment; updates and maintains files; operates a two-way radio; and answers phones and greets the public.

This class is designed to develop future firefighter candidates. This is a part-time, non-union position and incumbents work a maximum of twenty-eight (28) hours per week. Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Some work is performed at a telephone panel and computer terminal. Some work may be performed in a field environment with some travel from site to site and exposure to hazardous conditions. Incumbents may be required to wear protective gear and may be exposed to noise, dust, fumes, noxious odors, and gases; incumbents may be required to lift and drag items weighing up to 125 pounds.
Qualifications Open to all qualified Hartford Residents who desire to become a sworn City of Hartford Firefighter and meet the qualifications below. AGE : Must be between the ages of 16 (before the closing date of June 09, 2026) and 24. Incumbents who no longer meet the age requirements will be administratively separated.
DOCUMENTATION PROVING AGE MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH THE APPLICATION.
EDUCATION : Graduation from high school or GED program or enrolled and attending a high school or GED program.
Fire Explorers’ experience preferred.
A COPY OF YOUR DEGREE OR TRANSCRIPT FROM HIGH SCHOOL, GED PROGRAM , OR COLLEGE MUST BE SUBMITTED WITH THE APPLICATION.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT : Must posses a Valid Connecticut Driver's License or the ability to obtain within one year of employment.
HARTFORD RESIDENCY REQUIRED : Must be a bona-fide resident of the City of Hartford at the time of application. A completed CITY OF HARTFORD RESIDENCY AFFIDAVIT including proof of residency as indicated on the RESIDENCY AFFIDAVIT must be submitted. (SEE BELOW FOR IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING RESIDENCY).
CITY OF HARTFORD RESIDENCY AFFIDAVIT : In order to qualify for residency with the City of Hartford Human Resources Rules and Regulations, the City of Hartford requires that you provide irrefutable evidence to substantiate that as of the date of your application for employment, you are domiciled in the City of Hartford.
For the purpose of this Request, "DOMICILED" is defined to be "that place where an individual has his/her true, fixed and permanent home, where he or she normally eats and sleeps and maintains his or her normal personal and household effects."
You are required to complete and submit the Residency Affidavit at the time of your application for employment. You must also be prepared to submit any additional documentation, as the Director of Human Resources may require. This information will be subject to verification during the background investigation.
