  • Job Description

    The City of Foster City is looking for a Building/Fleet Maintenance Superintendent who will oversee the Building and Fleet Maintenance Division of the Public Works Department. This position is responsible for planning, organizing, supervising, reviewing, and evaluating diverse and specialized building and fleet maintenance and repair functions.

    This position manages and develops outside contracts, vendors, and project budgets; assures regulatory compliance and economy in all programs; coordinates assigned activities with other City departments and outside agencies; provides responsible and technical staff assistance; and performs duties as assigned. The ideal candidate would be able to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

    Education and Experience
    Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities. A typical way would be:

    Education : Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade supplemented by specialized training or coursework in construction trades, maintenance, automotive technology, or repair, and/or supervision.

    Experience : Five (5) years of experience as a journey-level mechanic performing vehicle and equipment repairs or general repair and maintenance in one or more of the building trades, of which two (2) years should be in a supervisory or lead capacity.

    Licenses and Certifications
    • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid Class C California driver’s license upon appointment.
    • Possession of ,or the ability to obtain, National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification in air conditioning, brakes, and electrical systems is highly desired.
    • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, Building Operator Certification Level 1 and 2 is highly desired.

    Selection Process
    Applications will be reviewed for relevant education, experience, training and other job related qualifications. Based upon a review of employment applications received, a limited number of the qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the examination process.

    The process will consist of an Oral Panel Interview (weighted 80%) and a written exercise (weighted 20%). An eligibility list will be established from those who pass the examination process with a score of 70% or higher. Current and future vacancies may be filled from this list. The list will remain in effect for at least one year unless exhausted sooner.

    The department will invite the most qualified candidates from the eligibility list to a final department interview. The Public Works department will make the hiring decision.

    Expected Dates for Examinations (subject to change):
    Oral Panel Interview: Week of June 22 or 29 (exact date TBD)
    Department Interview: Week of June 29 or early July (exact date TBD)

    Note: Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee that a candidate will be invited to participate in the selection process. The City of Foster City reserves the right, at its discretion, to limit the number of qualified candidates invited to the selection process.

    Foster City is located midway between San Francisco and San Jose on the western shoreline of the San Francisco Bay, east of U.S. 101, which provides convenient access to the San Francisco Airport with San Francisco to the north and Santa Clara County to the south. During the initial stages of Foster City’s development, new growth was mainly residential or residential serving in nature. Since 1980, several major commercial and research and development uses have been completed, adding a substantial daytime work force population to the City and providing employment opportunities to Foster City residents. The largest employers today include VISA and Gilead Sciences.
