    BEAR SAFETY

    Reports to: Excursions Supervisor

    Category: Seasonal (April - September 2026 in Hoonah, Alaska)

    Salary Range: Seasonal $19.00 plus bonus potential


    Position Summary:

    The overriding responsibility of a bear safety employee is to SAFELY provide a high-quality experience for anyone being transported by bus and on foot at the Spasski Bear Trail, or the ISP Hiking Trail. Bear Safety staff are expected to be able to provide interpretation and narration for guests on bear excursions and answer occasional questions.


    Responsibilities:

    Conduct all activities and decisions according to Icy Strait Point's guiding principles: Best, Authentic and Profitable Tour Destination.

    Always act in a SAFE, responsible manner and keep all equipment in SAFE condition.

    Deliver a first-class experience to all guests and visitors.

    Effective public speaking when addressing guests, crew or the public.

    Learn and impart knowledge to guests and do site promotion of Icy Strait Point

    Provide excellent customer service to all ISP guests.

    Ensure the safety of all guests on tours.

    Ability to take charge of a crowd in an emergency.

    Other duties as assigned.


    Experience, Skills and Qualifications:

    Have or be able to attain First Aid/CPR certification.

    Driver's License with clean driving record preferred.

    Must be insurable with Icy Strait Point (DUI, DWI, negligent or reckless driving citations within the past 5 years is uninsurable).

    Advanced Firearm knowledge and experience must be capable of operating a manual cycle shotgun using rifled slugs to engage 12inch demonstrating SAFETY first.

    Pre-employment, random, post-accident, and reasonable suspicion of drug and alcohol testing.

    Must be able to learn a Tlingit Introduction, knowledge, or willingness to learn about Tlingit culture.

    Knowledge of the local area (marine life, plants, animals, birds).

    Must have good customer service skills.

    Must have good verbal communication and presentation skills.

    Must pass pre-employment drug testing as well as random drug testing throughout the season.

    Ability to stand/walk for up to 12 hours/day w/minimal breaks. Participate in all required training.


    Physical Requirements & Work Environment:

    Able to lift 50 pounds, stand for extended periods, and walk 5+ miles daily.

    Willing to live in a remote, rural community.

    Comfortable traveling by small plane or ferry to and from a remote setting

    Able to walk and drive on gravel roads in inclement weather.
