Job Description
Overview
The Solid Waste Technician will perform non CDL driving, related operational tasks associated with the Municipal Solid Waste industry including but not limited to; cart delivery/repair, customer service, safety spotter, manual collections, litter pick up, waste screenings, dead animal collection, equipment maintenance/washing, assets repair, turf management and light equipment operations.
Responsibilities
• Greets customers and answers solid waste relation questions
• Communicates with Supt. Planner/scheduler and Foreman in person, over the radio or via phone to receive/clarify special instructions
• Verifies delivery/pickup locations, record cart serial numbers, and address any special instructions encountered
• Watches over operational area to keep customers and fellow employees safe
• Assists with maintaining a safe separation of solid waste equipment and public, both inside the facility and outside on the city streets
• Performs safety spotter service for solid waste equipment operators
• Inspects work area for unsafe conditions and report/correct as needed
• Assists with the collection of garbage/recycle routes, climb in and out of truck multiple times per day
• Rolls cart to truck for collection an and return to set out location, stand and direct traffic for extended period of time (hours)
• Activities including but not limited to: raking, digging, sweeping, carrying, picking refuse off the ground and in fields, mowing, weed eating, and painting
• Organizes and maintains cart storage area, keep equipment clean after use, keep grounds clear of litter and debris, keep took stored properly, mow, operate weed eater
• Performs small maintenance items such as painting, fence/screen repair, manual digging of clean outs, drains, ditches, and posts, pressure washing, cleaning admin offices and warehouse
• Inspects incoming loads at the landfill and transfer station to ensure compliance with permit and stage regulations
• Maintains vigilance at all assignments to identify/remove/report nonacceptable items
• Performs ASTM-method 9095 per EPA guidelines tests such as paint filter tests
• Assists mechanics and Sanitation Operators as needed to perform preventative maintenance and light mechanical work on all solid waste heavy equipment such as garbage trucks, brush trucks, dozer, front end loaders and excavators

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work
• Non - Exempt - Full-Time - 40 hours a week
• Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a schedule requirement
• In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services

Minimum Qualifications
• High School Diploma/GED
• Six (6) months to One (1) year of experience
Certifications, Licenses or other requirements

• A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hiring

Basis of Rating
A recruitment consultant will evaluate all applications against the posted qualifications. The city may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview
