The Contra Costa County Assessor’s Office is currently seeking qualified candidates to fill two (2) permanent, full-time Assessor’s Mapping Technician positions within the mapping division. This position plays a vital role in the creation and maintenance of the Assessor’s mapping data.
Assessor’s Mapping Technicians are responsible for performing technical mapping and drafting duties using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) systems, and other mapping technologies. They create, maintain, and update spatial and cartographic data for property assessment and public use.

What you will typically be responsible for: - Creating and updating subdivision maps, parcel maps, land survey maps, and right-of-way information.
- Conducting data modeling and integration with spatial layers.
- Creating and maintaining geo-referenced databases, maps, and spatial data using Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) and Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software to ensure accurate parcel representation and integration between systems.
- Maintaining and updating parcel fabric layers, geodatabases, and other GIS data layers by collecting and verifying information from Assessor’s Office staff, other agencies, and source documents such as parcel maps, legal descriptions, and recorded deeds.
- Incorporating newly created or revised maps and plans into existing digital base map files to maintain version control and data consistency.
- Performing standard spatial operations and analyses, such as buffering, overlays, and distance calculations, using established GIS tools and methods.
- Responding to inquiries from County departments, public agencies, and the public regarding assessment maps, parcel divisions, addresses, and related spatial information; provideing customer service and prepares custom maps or data extracts as requested.

The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill future openings for up to six (6) months.
Minimum Qualifications Education: Possession of a high school diploma, GED proficiency or high school equivalency certificate and at least nine (9) semester or twelve (12) quarter units in computer aided drafting, geographic information systems, cartography, or a closely related field; or the equivalent in coursework or CAD/GIS certification from a recognized technical or trade school.
Experience: Two (2) years of experience using computer-aided drafting (CAD) and/or geographic information systems (GIS) software in mapping, drafting, civil engineering, land surveying, geography, or cartography.
Substitution for Experience: Successful completion of thirty (30) semester or forty-five (45) quarter units from an accredited college or university that includes at least twelve (12) semester or eighteen (18) quarter units in computer aided drafting, geographic information systems, cartography, or a closely related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
Desirable Qualifications: - Title and land transfer experience
- Experience working with land records, specifically those used for property tax assessment, land surveying, and/or engineering
- Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
- Experience interpreting technical descriptions of property contained in deeds
- Experience with Computer Aided Drafting software (CAD)
Selection ProcessApplication Filing and Evaluation: All applicants must apply online at www.cccounty.us/hr and submit the information as indicated on the job announcement and supplemental questionnaire by the final filing date. Depending on the number of applications received, an Application Evaluation Board may be convened to evaluate and select the best-qualified candidates for invitation to the next phase of the examination.
Online Virtual Interview: Candidates who clearly demonstrate that they possess the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in an online virtual interview. Candidates must achieve an average overall passing score of 70% of higher to move forward in the selection process. The assessment will measure candidates' competencies as they relate to the job. These may include, but are not limited to: Analyzing & Interpreting Data, Attention to Detail, Critical Thinking, Customer Focus, Professional & Technical Expertise, and Teamwork.

The Online Oral Assessment is tentatively scheduled to take place via computer (remotely), May 15th through 21st, 2026.
