The Operations Section of King County’s Solid Waste Division (SWD) is inviting applications for (1) Career Service position.

As the Technical Expert for Solid Waste Division (SWD) systems, you’ll be at the forefront of maintaining and advancing the specialized electronic systems that power our landfills, transfer stations, and support facilities.

About this Role:

Serve as the technical expert for diagnosing, repairing, and enhancing a wide range of electronic systems used across Solid Waste Division facilities, and monitoring controls. Utilize advanced diagnostic tools and software to perform system evaluations, modify existing infrastructure, and document changes. Design and implement custom solutions, fabricate and install specialized components, and coordinate with electricians and other staff to ensure system reliability and safety. Provide training, maintain detailed records, and support cross-functional efforts to improve infrastructure performance and compliance. Troubleshooting wastewater pumps, water pump and pump controls.

The King County Solid Waste Division (KCSWD) is responsible for the public solid waste system that services the people and communities of unincorporated King County and most cities within King County. KCSWD is the lead King County agency for delivering the Zero Waste of Resources goal for the region, which will reduce valuable materials sent to the landfill by up to 70%. KCSWD operates the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill, ten transfer facilities, nine closed landfills, and many programs to design out waste and pollution, keep products and materials in use and regenerate natural systems.

Job Duties

What You Will De Doing:
Perform maintenance and repairs on (0-1000) volt systems. Familiar with switchgear, ancillary equipment, flare station components.
Troubleshoot and assess electrical power, lighting, control and equipment to determine cause of electrical and equipment failure.
Repair damaged electrical equipment, panels, conduit and conductors.
Install electrical systems in new construction.
Install, modify and upgrade new and existing electrical systems, component parts and other related electrical equipment in compliance with municipal and national electrical codes.
Evaluate existing equipment, provide recommendations for future electrical needs and anticipate costs.
Maintain current equipment with preventive maintenance measures. Perform visual inspection and conduct cleaning including variable-speed drives, motors, motor control centers and programmable controllers.
Maintain, troubleshoot and repair electronic digital communications control systems, fans, pumps and their motor control equipment, digital card reader systems, cameras, parking gates and roll-up doors, motion sensors, door monitoring systems.
Maintain, troubleshoot and repair power distribution systems including but not limited to lighting distribution and low-voltage switching, power distribution panels and circuits, emergency generator and related heating, and power transfer switches.
Perform troubleshooting, maintenance, or installation of blower systems and industrial flares
Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

Qualifications You Bring:
Experience (3 years preferred) as a technical expert to diagnose malfunctions, perform repairs, test and locate defective components and document results.
Experience (3 years preferred) in electronic functions of heavy equipment and troubleshooting control’s, PLC’s, blowers and pumps.
Experience (3 years preferred) working in industrial setting.
Demonstrated knowledge of federal, Washington State and local electrical codes.
Demonstrated skill in installing complete electrical systems.
Working knowledge with electrical tools, materials, use of hand and power tools.
Demonstrated skills in reading blueprints and schematic drawings, technical reading and writing skills.
Demonstrated skill in reading and interpreting electrical instrumentation and test equipment.
Knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA)
Skill in oral and written communication.

It Would be Great if You Also Bring:

Demonstrated experience (3 years preferred) with solar pumps
Demonstrated experience (3 years preferred) is gas collection equipment electrical
Demonstrated experience (3 years preferred) motor and pump control programing
Experience (3 years preferred) as a Journeyman electrician.

Required Licenses/Certifications:

Valid WA State Driver’s License
WA State Electrician (01) License

Supplemental Information

Working Conditions:
Work Location: The operations Section works onsite, The work associated with this position will be located: SWD Maintenance Facility, 201 SW 34th Street, Renton, WA. Will be travelling to other transfer stations, Cedar Hills and Bow Lake.
Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.

King County has a robust collection of tools and resources to support working remotely. The individual selected for this opportunity will join an innovative and progressive team that is redefining how we work as we transition to the department's hybrid environment. Employees will be provided with a County-issued laptop and must maintain a home workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours.

Work Schedule: This position works a 40-hour workweek and is overtime eligible with Supervisor approval. Service hours are Monday to Friday, 5:30am to 2:30pm. May be required to work alternative work schedules to support core service hours. Might have weekend work as well.

The Solid Waste Division is only closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. In this position, you are considered an essential employee and will be expected to work during weather, health and other emergency events.
Union Representation: This position is represented by JCC L46 Electricians - T2C
Physical Environment/Requirements: The candidate must be able to work in confined spaces, outdoors in all weather, high traffic maintenance facility with possible adverse conditions such as noise and dust. The candidate must also have the ability to lift at least 50 lbs. at least once daily with or without assistance.
