On October 31, 1864, President Lincoln proclaimed Nevada's admission to the Union as the 36th state. The State's first elected Governor, Henry Blasdel, took office on December 5, 1864. Today, Nevada is the nation's seventh largest state in land area. Several hundred mountain ranges cross its landscape, many with elevations over 10,000 feet. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems. The Nevada Legislature has honored the State's natural resources and cultural heritage with a variety of State designations described below.

    The Position

    Corrections Counselors within in the Nevada Department of Corrections provide mental health services to offenders in a correctional setting including interviews, behavioral planning and implementation, consultation, psycho-educational classes, research, and training.

    Corrections Counselor IIIs are assigned complex caseloads and provide care for the most severely mentally ill, developmentally, or learning-disabled offenders and provide for psycho-educational programs and groups.

    The Nevada Department of Corrections is seeking qualified candidate for Correctional Counselor 3. This position is located at Florence McClure Women's Correctional Center (FMWCC) in Las Vegas, NV. Incumbent will provide support services to offenders in a correctional setting to include assessments and psycho-educational classes, provide behavioral observations and make specific treatment recommendations, crisis intervention with appropriate de-escalation techniques and principles, case management and behavioral/human services to offenders with mental illness. Under general supervision, Corrections Counselor 3's are assigned complex caseloads and provide care for the most severely mentally ill, developmentally or learning-disabled offenders. Incumbent will provide group treatment to inmates through psycho-educational and other group formats, utilizing evidence-based and scientifically researched program models, review all pertinent historical clinical records before beginning treatment, evaluate offenders' mental health status and behavior for clinical needs and make appropriate referrals, evaluate all emergency or crisis requests, provide intervention strategy or treatment plans, prepare a mental health summary to assure continuity of care for inmates being transferred, participate in planning, developing and coordinating program services to meet the needs of the offender population, may consult and train staff regarding policies, procedures, statutory and ethical requirements in areas relevant to agency services.

    To Qualify:

    In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
    Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Master's degree from an accredited college or university in clinical psychology, psychology, counseling, education, social work, or closely related field and three years of post-Master's degree experience providing therapy, psychological testing and programmatic services in a correctional, rehabilitative, clinic or institutional setting; OR a Doctoral degree from an accredited college or university in clinical psychology, counseling psychology, educational psychology, social work, or closely related field which included a one-year internship in an applied program and one year of professional experience providing therapy, psychological testing and programmatic services in a correctional, rehabilitative, clinic or institutional setting; OR a Doctoral degree (Psy.D.) in clinical psychology from an accredited school of professional psychology, a one-year internship in an applied program, and one year of experience as described above; OR one year of experience as a Corrections Counselor II in Nevada State service. Special Requirements Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety.
