    Position: Assistant Professor of Nutrition and Dietetics
    Effective Date: August 18, 2025 (Fall Semester)
    Salary: The Assistant Professor (Academic Year) classification salary range is $71,100 - $151,128/per year. The anticipated hiring range is $94,000 to 97,000 annually. Salary offered is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

    The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) in the College of Health and Human Services at California State University, Long Beach, is recruiting an Assistant Professor of Nutrition and Dietetics with a preferred emphasis in clinical nutrition. Applicants whose work incorporates a global perspective and evidence of a commitment to racial/ethnic diversity in practice are encouraged to apply. This position is an academic year (9-month) position. The mission of FCS is to prepare leaders for the family and consumer sciences professions, of which nutrition is one. We are an exemplary, comprehensive, and integrative unit in the California State University system that focuses on teaching, scholarship, and service to and about individuals, families, and communities in a diverse, dynamic society. The Nutrition and Food Science area within the FCS department supports minor certificates, undergraduate degrees, graduate degrees, and accredited programs to train registered dietitian nutritionists.

    Required Qualifications:
    • Ph.D. in nutrition, clinical nutrition, public health, or a related field (e.g., education, psychology, biology, etc.) or official certification to complete the doctoral degree by August 1, 2025.
    • Current Registered Dietitian (RD)/Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) credential
    • Demonstrated teaching effectiveness at the college level
    • Demonstrated potential for successfully conducting research
    • Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population, including Black/African American, Latine/x, Native American/Indigenous, low-income, first-generation, and minoritized students

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Experience successfully working with populations demographically and/or socioeconomically similar to the CSULB student body
    • Practice experience as a registered dietitian nutritionist in a clinical, food service, or community setting
    • Active involvement in professional societies or service related to nutrition and dietetics
    • Experience in mentoring or advising undergraduate and graduate students
    • Evidence of communication skills, collegiality, and leadership consistent with the mission and goals of the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences.
    • Demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence via training and/or application of pedagogical best practices (e.g. culturally responsive teaching, reflective learning)
    • Evidence of expertise in one or more of the following: clinical nutrition, food service, management, or community nutrition
    • Experience mentoring or supporting students with minoritized identities or experience using inclusive and culturally relevant teaching strategies in a diverse classroom

    Duties:

    Depending on the expertise of the incoming faculty member, may focus on the application of three possible areas, including: 1) clinical nutrition (Clinical Nutrition I, Clinical Nutrition II, Nutritional Genomics, Pharmacology, and Supplements), 2) food service management (Foodservice for a Diverse Population or Managing People, Budgets, and Problems in Food and Nutrition Settings), or 3) community nutrition (Culturally Sensitive Nutrition Counseling and Education, Dreams to Dollars: Marketing, Entrepreneurship, and Grant Writing for Nutrition).
    • Teach and develop a selection of undergraduate and graduate level courses within the bachelor’s degree program in Nutrition and Food Science as well as our new ACEND-Accredited Graduate Program (GP) in Applied Nutrition and Dietetics [Mode of instruction may include in-person, hybrid, online, and/or any combination thereof.]
    • Develop courses within the Nutrition area based upon their area(s) of expertise in emerging and innovative areas which may include but are not limited to topics such as clinical nutrition, health equity/health disparities in nutrition, integrative and functional nutrition, plant-based diets, sustainability, or sports nutrition
    • Produce and develop a record of research/scholarly activities leading to publications, including securing internal and external funding, and other contributions commensurate with expertise
    • Supervise graduate students for their research projects
    • Engage in collaborative projects within and outside of the university and community
    • Mentor and advise prospective and current students at the undergraduate and graduate levels
    • Seek and apply for external funding to support research agenda
    • Participate in committee service
    • Active participation in Nutrition professional societies at the local and national levels
    • Participate in service to the department, college, university, and community
