The Marion County Sheriff's Office is seeking both trainee and certified applicants to join our Institutions team as a Deputy Sheriff. The Marion County Sheriff's Office is a full-service law enforcement agency consisting of four operational divisions: Community Corrections, Enforcement, Institutions and Operations. Institutions deputies provide 24‑hour supervision, monitor all adults in custody, and facilitate programs/services for pretrial and sentenced adults in custody.SalaryWagesTrainee Pay Rate: $31.40 – $37.87 per hour*Certified Pay Rate: $34.48 – $46.16 per hour**Hourly rate negotiableIncentives:Certification 8% (4% intermediate and 4% advanced)Bilingual 5%Field Training Officer 5%Instructor 5%Cell Extraction 5%SWAT Team 5%Longevity PayBenefitsMedical and dental insurance with 95% employer contributionPERS & OPSRP Retirement (Marion County pays employee's 6% contribution)Paid vacation and sick leave11 paid holidays per year1 paid commissioners day per year2 paid personal holidays per yearPaid training program with accelerated field training for qualifying lateral applicantsEmployer provided Group Term Life InsuranceEmployer provided Long‑Term Disability PlanVoluntary Term Life InsuranceVoluntary Short‑Term DisabilityVoluntary Deferred Compensation PlanEmployee Assistance ProgramRetirement Medical Trust with employer contributionsResponsibilitiesMaintains security, sanitation, health, and medical standards by supervising adults in custody.Ensures due process rights of adults in custody in disciplinary matters and maintains legal system access.Ensures adults in custody have access to materials, services and privileges according to the law.Adheres to, implements and enforces job‐related rules, policies, procedures and post orders to promote a safe, secure and orderly facility.Attends and participates in facility and unit briefings, meetings, and training.Initiates and maintains neat, accurate and complete reports, memos, disciplinary reports, logbooks and unit rosters.Works in a 24‑hour, 7‑day a week facility; may require day, swing, night shifts, weekends, holidays and overtime.Remains constantly alert and observant during the entire shift.Controls access to and egress from the facility.Conducts visual adult welfare checks and counts, equipment and structural inspections.Conducts tactile‑clothed and visual‑unclothed searches to discover contraband and ensure adult welfare.Conducts area searches to detect contraband or deficiencies in security systems or physical structure.Transports and escorts adults inside and outside the facility.Responds to and assists other staff in managing a variety of emergency situations.Uses approved facility restraints to control adults.Operates fire‑fighting equipment in institutional fires.Maintains and uses firearms.Monitors audio traffic on radios, telephones and intercoms, and acts as central dispatch.Controls, issues, and records issuance of keys and radios.Monitors auditory and visual emergency alarm systems.Coordinates directly with the incident commander during emergencies.Uses audio‑visual surveillance equipment to monitor movement in hallways.Verbally provides instructions and orders to adults over the intercom for facility safety and order.Qualifications – State Department of Public Safety StandardsUnited States citizen within one year of employment.At least 21 years of age at employment (consideration for 20‑year‑old applicants who meet qualifications and are 21 within 90 days).Declared by a physician as able to perform required physical duties.Of good moral fitness; no legal conduct involving moral turpitude, dishonesty, fraud, deceit, misrepresentation, or conviction of drug and/or sex crimes.Information on minimum qualifications and physical requirements available in Oregon Administrative Rules 259‑008‑0010.Qualifications – Marion County RequirementsMust possess a valid Oregon driver's license or obtain it within 30 days of hire; driving record reviewed per County policy.Finalists subject to extensive background investigation.Finalists required to pass a psychological and physical exam.Ability to hold, aim, and discharge a firearm with sufficient accuracy to meet department qualifications.Must complete Field Training and Evaluation Program within first year.Position is safety‑sensitive/special needs; candidates must pass a pre‑employment drug screen including marijuana testing.Position normally works rotating, split, or alternative work schedules.Additional Requirements for Certified LevelMust meet trainee level requirements and have eighteen months of experience as a corrections officer or deputy, or a satisfactory combination of work, education, training, or experience relevant to the position.Must possess a Basic Corrections Officer certification from the Department of Public Safety.
