Job Description
Overview
Protects public health through education and enforcement of all regulations pertinent to environmental health. The role conducts inspections of food service establishments, public and semi‑public pools, day care centers, foster homes, and on‑site sewage facilities. It includes teaching food handler classes, responding to general sanitation complaints, and ensuring compliance with all applicable health and safety standards. Requires strong communication skills and the ability to supervise, negotiate, instruct, and work effectively with the public and various stakeholders.
Responsibilities
• Conduct food service inspections for food establishments, mobile units, temporary concession stands, shrimp boats, and flea market vendors to ensure compliance with City ordinances related to sanitation and the prevention of foodborne illnesses
• Verify that every food establishment has a valid permit
• Investigate consumer complaints, document findings with photos, and complete necessary follow-up
• Ensure compliance with the Texas Food Establishment Rules
• Conduct pool inspections by assessing water quality, pool structure, safety requirements, enclosures, disinfection systems, chlorine levels, and pH balance
• Inspect and permit day care centers by reviewing grounds, kitchens, food storage areas, garbage containers, electrical outlets, and ensuring toxic products are properly stored
• Inspect foster homes for adoption or foster care approval for the State of Texas by assessing cleanliness, adequate storage space, bedding, and overall living environment
• Inspect on-site sewage facilities including measuring tanks and field lines, classifying soils, and measuring trenches
• Ensure compliance with Local, State, and Federal regulations
• Maintain professional and technical knowledge by keeping required licenses and certifications current
• Drive to inspection sites within the City and County as required by job duties
• Educate food handlers by teaching food handler classes and explaining methods to control foodborne illnesses and bacterial growth
• Issue food handler cards and assists with additional tasks as assigned

Qualifications
• Bachelor's Degree (BA/BS)
• Two (2) years of experience
Licenses and Certifications
Required
• A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire
Required within three (3) months of hire
• Food Handler and Food Manager Certificate
• CPR and First Aid Certification
• Incident Command Structure training (100,200,700 and 800)
Required withing one (1) year of hire
• TCEQ Designated Representative/certification
Required withing two (2) years of hire
• Swimming Pool Certification
• Registered Sanitarian License

Basis of Rating
A recruitment consultant will evaluate all applications against the posted qualifications and may request additional information. The city may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview.
