Westminster Police Department has announced that it will now be offering impressive $10,000 signing bonuses to qualifying lateral police officers in an attempt to attract experienced men and women to fill respected positions within the agency.

On Wednesday, September 27, 2017, the proposal to provide bonuses to enhance the city’s police recruitment efforts topped the agenda of the Westminster City Council. With approximately 11 sworn position vacancies and an additional 9 police officer positions to be filled, the Westminster Police Department has been attempting to increase the number of qualified applicants and recruit suitable men and women to serve the citizens of Westminster. Although the WPD has added 17 new officers in the past two years, a staggering 21 have moved on. More than one-third of the officers who left the department transferred to other Orange County law enforcement agencies in surrounding communities like Anaheim, Garden Grove, Seal Beach and Irvine. It is hoped that the bonus program, which follows the same basic guidelines as one recently implemented in La Habra, will return the WPD to a capacity with which it can satisfactorily serve and protect the community.

What You Should Know About the New Police Bonus Program in Westminster, CA

Funded by existing salary savings, the bonus program is designed to enhance recruitment efforts to fill open positions with the Westminster Police Department. Since the agency is seeking to fill many of these vacancies with men and women who have related experience in similar positions, not every new officer will be eligible to receive the bonus. To qualify, candidates must:

  • Be in possession of a Basic POST Certification
  • Have served at least 12 months in a sworn position within a California law enforcement agency
  • Currently serve as a sworn police officer within a California law enforcement agency; or recently have served in such a position within the previous 12 months
  • Have undergone completion of the required probationary period at their most recent law enforcement agency
  • Not have previously served as a police officer for the WPD unless waived by the Chief of Police

If hired, eligible lateral transfers will receive the bonus in two installments. Immediately upon hire, qualifying officers will receive $5,000. The remaining $5,000 will be paid out upon completion of the required 18-month probationary period.

In addition to the signing bonuses offered by the Westminster Police Department, officers who remain with the agency can expect to receive a 3.5% salary increase in 2018, and an additional salary increase of 3% in 2019.
