REQUEST FOR CANDIDATE TO MEET PRIVATELY WITH COUNCIL MEMBER« Back to Questions List

I am a finalist in a selection process for Police Chief and a member of the City Council contacted me directly with a request to meet me “privately” to discuss issues important to his decision to support me or not.  How do I handle this?

This largely depends on the form of government (i.e. – Charter etc.). Either the municipal government’s manager or Mayor should be notified of the request and suggestions sought. I once had such a request and made certain that the entire governing body was at ease with request before meeting individually with the Councilman before an interview. The entire group was also briefed. It all worked out well.
