THE POSITION Please note: Employment dates for this position are from May to August, possibly September.Although this recruitment has multiple-cutoffs, only one application needs to be submitted. NON-CAREER PART-TIME/SEASONAL The Aquatics Section oversees the operation of 19 aquatic facilities throughout the City of Sacramento. Staff in the Aquatic Section work to to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment while offering a comprehensive aquatics program including recreational swimming, swim lessons, swim teams, water aerobics, lap swimming, pool rentals and more. Student Trainees in the Aquatic Section perform a wide variety of duties depending on areas of study and interest. Time may be spent assisting with aquatic programs such as swim lessons, swim teams and special events. Additionally, duties may include cleaning of pools, testing water quality, cleaning facilities and restrooms, and light on site landscaping if interest in pool maintenance. Opportunities for experience in customer service, office work, and social media marketing exist in this position as well. The Student Trainee class is designed to enable college students to prepare for employment upon graduation. Employment in this class entails a wide variety of fundamental tasks in order to familiarize students with the practical application of academic theory. During the academic term, hours are normally limited to a maximum of twenty hours per week. During academic vacation periods this limit does not apply and students may work full-time. This class is distinguished from the Graduate Student Trainee class by the lower level of responsibility which may be assigned to the Student Trainees. SUPERVISION EXERCISED AND RECEIVED Immediate supervision may be provided by high level departmental or division administrative personnel or by supervisory officers. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Depending upon assignment, typical duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: - Perform a variety of fundamental duties in various divisions of the employing department. - Provide basic assistance in research projects, special reports, and special departmental problems. - Gather, compile, tabulate, and report statistical data. - Acquire working knowledge of department practices, procedures, equipment, and organizational systems. - Respond to citizen inquires and complaints. - Perform related duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: - Simple research and statistical methods. - English usage, spelling, and punctuation. Ability to: - Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. - Collect, compile, analyze, and interpret statistical data. Education and Career Objectives: - Academic status at an accredited college or university taking courses as a full-time student leading to a degree and/or certificate in a field related to the work which is performed. Upon graduation, students are no longer eligible for this classification. - Strong interest in securing full-time employment with the City of Sacramento in this same field.
