About Our Job The Department of Public Works delivers services that help to define and improve the quality of life in Denver. Denver Public Works is responsible for road maintenance and repair; residential trash, recycling and compost collection; design and construction of streets, bridges, public buildings, and storm and sanitary sewers; transportation and parking services; oversight and regulation of use of the public right-of-way; and implementation of the Public Works Environmental Management System (EMS). Solid Waste provides weekly trash collection service, every-other-week recycling, and a voluntary, fee-based composting program for single family Denver homes, multi-family dwellings with up to seven units, municipal facilities, and Denver Public Schools. The Division's graffiti removal program removes graffiti from private and commercial property and the public right-of-way. The Solid Waste Management group within the Department of Public Works has an opening for a Senior Utility Worker. Job duties and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following: Operates vehicles at a higher level of complexity on the equipment operation list and in that capacity perform pre-trip inspections on equipment for such things as fluid levels, leaks, condition of hoses and belts, tire pressure, brake lights, and related areas, secure, clean and care for all basic tools and equipment needed for job assignments and drives vehicle to various job sites. Lifts and empties heavy solid waste containers into disposal trucks, operates hydraulic compaction unit on city trash collection vehicles, and washes trucks as needed. Cleanup of homeless camps and city facility yards Deliver, assemble or clean automated carts. Perform extra trash collection (large items), graffiti abatement, dead animal or E-waste collection. Performs semi-skilled and light to heavy physical labor on a variety of construction, maintenance, and repair projects that involves physical exertion and the operation of light weight motorized equipment and hand and power tools. Assists in training and checking the work of other employees on various projects. Observes all common safety practices associated with small engines and hand and power tool equipment operations. Performs seasonal street maintenance duties such as snow plowing, salting and sanding, and shoveling bridges and sidewalks Performs other related duties as assigned.
