    The mission of Catawba Bend Preserve is to provide a nature-based, outdoor recreation preserve connecting visitors to activities and programs that celebrate the native landscapes and ecosystems of York County. Nearly 1,700 acres of the project site has been placed under a conservation easement, protecting the land’s natural resources, and limiting development.

    About our opportunity

    We invite you to join our team as a part-time, non-exempt Gatehouse Worker with our Parks Department at Catawba Bend Preserve as the park is planning to gear up operations in January. The purpose of this position is to greet and welcome visitors to the park, collect entrance fees from individuals entering the park; to provide quality information, customer service and assistance to all park visitors. The ideal candidate will provide a positive, professional, and welcoming experience to park guest.

    Projected Salary Range/Pay Grade 107: $16.78 - $20.14 per hour. Salary is determined based on qualifications.
    Work Schedule: 24 hours weekly. Due to the nature of the park operation and operating hours, this WILL require holiday and weekend shifts.

    Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Create a friendly and welcoming first impression to all park visitors and guests and leave a positive lasting impression.
    • Monitors the Park gatehouse for approaching park guests and collects entrance fees; collects payments for shelter rentals; and collects annual pass sales and completes documentation.
    • Professionally and courteously explains park rules and regulations and provides requested information to park guests.
    • Prepares required records, reports, and correspondence.
    • Performs general clerical duties as required, including but not limited to answering the telephone, entering and retrieving computer data, copying and filing documents, maintaining supply inventory, etc.; monitors and maintains gatehouse and work environment for cleanliness.
    • Attends training, meetings, etc. as appropriate to maintain or enhance job knowledge and skills.
    • May perform park store duties (e.g., sale of goods, cashier duties, and stocking duties) as needed.
    • Assists with camper check-in / check-out duties.
    • Performs related work as assigned.

    Education and Experience:
    • Must be 16 years of age or older.
    • High School Diploma or GED equivalent preferred.

    Physical Demands:

    Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
    • Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing for extended periods and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.
    • Interface/interact with park guests for potentially extended periods

    Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment): Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
    • Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
      • Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.
      • Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.
      • Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.
      • Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.

    A regular part-time employee is an employee, who has completed six months of satisfactory service, works less than 30 hours per week and by agreement with York County is not a temporary position but fills a regular part-time position.

    Annual Leave
    Probationary and part-time county employees that work at least 20 hours per week accrue annual leave with pay. Employees in their new hire six (6) month probationary period shall not be able to use annual leave until they become regular county employees. Employees who are separating from county service shall be paid for all accrued, unused annual leave up to 360 hours provided they give York County as the employer the proper notice as required. Employees in their six (6) month New-Hire probationary period who are terminated or separated from employment shall not be paid for accrued annual leave. The maximum amount of annual leave carried into each calendar year is 360 hours.

    Earning Rate for Part-Time Employees
    Part-time employees who are scheduled to work twenty (20) to twenty-nine (29) hours per week will earn 4.0 hours of annual leave for each month of service during a twelve-month period

    Parental Leave
    Employees that have been employed at least 12 months with the county may be eligible for up to 30 days of parental leave immediately following the birth, adoption or placement of a legal dependent child.

    Bereavement Leave

    Three (3) days of bereavement leave for the death of an immediate family member, which includes a spouse, parent, grandparent or child.

    Sick Leave
    Part-time and probationary county employees may be entitled to earn sick leave with pay. Temporary employees will not accrue sick leave time. Employees may accrue up to 1,440 hours of sick leave. Upon termination of employment with the County, employees may not be reimbursed for any unused sick leave. When a paid holiday occurs while an employee is on sick leave with pay, the day may not be charged as sick leave.

    Earning Rate of Sick Leave
    Part-time employees that work twenty (20) to twenty-nine (29) hours per week earn paid sick leave at a rate of 4 hours per month. Part-time employees who work less than twenty (20) hours per week will not earn sick leave.

    Paid Holiday’s for regular part-time employees who work more than 20 hours per week. The following days may be observed as paid holidays for York County Employees:
    January - December: 3 Optional Holidays per Calendar Year
    January: New Year’s Day and Martin Luther King Day
    May: Memorial Day
    June: Juneteenth Day
    July: Independence Day
    September: Labor Day
    November: Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Friday after Thanksgiving
    December: Christmas Eve, Christmas Day

    Training:
    Quality training and educational programs are available at various times for county employees in order to support workforce development that is consistent with organizational objectives. Training topics may include driver training, CPR/first aid, communication, supervisor training, workplace violence, substance abuse, and various computer related classes.
