    Job Location: Saint Joseph, MO

    Why you’ll love this position:

    The geologist gives technical guidance to employees performing geotechnical investigations, aggregate inspection; serves as a technical consultant to a district on materials and geotechnical issues supporting preliminary engineering and roadway construction. Responsibilities are performed under general supervision.

    What you’ll do:

    • Provides technical guidance for the inspection of aggregates.
    • Conducts or oversees field investigations including preliminary geotechnical investigations, borrow site investigations, roadway condition investigations, and quarry ledge stone investigations.
    • Conducts preliminary geotechnical surveys and provides design and construction project recommendations.
    • Investigates geotechnical problems such as bridge/culvert foundations, landslides, erosion/drainage, subgrade instability and underground mines and determines corrective or preventive action.
    • Identifies, classifies, samples, and reports new ledge stone sources for evaluation of aggregate source quality.


    All you need for success:

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor's Degree in Geology or in Geological Engineering (or Civil Engineering with a Geotechnical emphasis) from an ABET-accredited college or university curriculum.
    • Licensed as a Registered Geologist in the State of Missouri.
    • Six years of experience in geology or geotechnical work related to highway or transportation engineering.
    • Successful completion of a work simulation examination and a medical-physical examination.


    Special Working Conditions:

    • Job requires significant physical stamina and endurance, including the ability to move materials by hand, operate hand tools, and perform stationary flagging.
    • Job requires outdoor work that involves exposure to physical hazards, health and safety risks, and/or adverse or otherwise undesirable characteristics in the environment, including risk of physical injury from carrying out duties in heavy traffic areas, on or near heavy equipment or machinery, and with hazardous chemicals or materials.
    • Job may require overtime and nighttime work.
    • Job may require operation of vehicles to plow snow and spread ice control materials.
