    Overview

    The District Attorney's Office is seeking a dedicated and thoughtful attorney to represent the Office of the District Attorney in various problem solving court dockets. It is anticipated this position will be responsible for Competency Court and Veterans Court, but could also cover or be rotated to Drug Court, DUI court, and Wellness Court. These courts offer an effective alternative to incarceration and the traditional criminal justice process, problem-solving courts use collaborative and innovative approaches to addressing the root causes of adult criminal behavior, including - addiction, mental health and combat-related issues specific to U.S. military veterans. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in criminal law, must be able the think critically and creatively, with experience or a keen interest in evidence based alternative sentencing models. In this role, you will work closely with judges, treatment providers, social service agencies, and other multidisciplinary team members to develop and implement treatment plans for participants, promoting their recovery and reducing recidivism.

    Our primary office is in Fort Collins with our second office in Loveland. In our district we have Cache La Poudre and Big Thompson rivers, Horsetooth Reservoir and the Rocky Mountain National Park. Staff are encouraged to take 2 long lunches a week to exercise and enjoy our community which could be running on one of our many local trails, biking (Fort Collins is a Platinum- rated bicycle friendly community with miles of dedicated bike lanes), or enjoying a yoga class in Old Town. Fort Collins is home to more than 20 craft breweries, Colorado State University, and family friendly community events. Our staff have recently won awards for innovations to improve efficiencies and forwarding thinking projects. In addition to great benefits (medical, dental, vision) Larimer County provides a wellness clinic to staff for preventative health screening and coaching, primary care services, and physical therapy. Staff can use clinic leave for these services as well as for massage or acupuncture. In addition to paid holidays, sick and vacation leave, after a probationary period staff may also have work from home options. We value the wellbeing of our staff and have a resiliency program with 13 clinicians who are readily available to all employees (appointments available as soon as the next day) plus we have trained peer support specialists in our office for anyone who needs to decompress.     Attorneys in this position can expect a regular Mon-Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. schedule; however, attorneys will also be included in the on-call schedule.

    Responsibilities

    What you'll be doing:
    • A person in this position will represent the DA's office in various problem solving court court dockets.
    • A person in this position would be rotated out at some point to also handle criminal proceedings including the scheduling of cases, plea negotiations, probation revocations hearings, motions and sentencing.
    • Regular responsibilities include receiving and reviewing summons, or tickets filed by arresting officers, and reviewing and examining the evidence, witness statements, determines whether a crime has been committed, the nature of the crime, and whether the evidence justifies prosecution.

    What we're looking for:
    • This position requires regular appearance in court, so predictable attendance is mandatory.
    • Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and members of the community.
    • Legal principles and practices with an emphasis on criminal law, know and understand court procedure and rules of evidence; and is able to perform legal work involving the use of independent judgment.


    Qualifications

    • Three years of experience in criminal prosecution, with demonstrated experience handling felony cases.
    • Current license to practice law in Colorado or obtain it within two (2) months of hire required.
