    Description

    The Public Works Department provides daily services integral to the community. The mission of the department is to provide quality services with commitment, courtesy, and pride. The Public Works staff strives to offer efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally responsible services that make Palo Alto a beautiful, vibrant, and appealing City in which to live and work.

    The Public Works Department Public Services Division is looking to fill a Cement Finisher position and is seeking a candidate with a strong work ethic and excellent interpersonal skills. The successful candidates will foster effective and cooperative working relationships with City staff and citizens at large.

    Schedule: This role is in person and schedule can be 9/80 (every other Friday off). M-Th 06:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m., 9/80 Friday shift 06:30-3:00 p.m.

    Essential Duties

    Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Knowledge of and ability to perform concrete construction and finish work
    • Ability to do basic calculation of concrete areas and volumes
    • Ability to lift and use 90-lb. jackhammer
    • Ability to operate a dump truck, bobcat with attachments, concrete saw, and mechanical grinders, and related equipment and tools
    • Ability to perform basic calculations of concrete areas and volumes
    • Ability to perform basic plumbing to replace sprinklers and/or irrigation systems
    • Skill in basic carpentry and masonry to restore property damaged during demolition phase
    • Ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include walking, standing or kneeling for extended periods of time and operating assigned equipment and vehicles
    • Ability to communicate with others and to assimilate and understand information, in a manner consistent with the essential job functions
    • Ability to operate assigned equipment
    • Ability to make sound decisions in a manner consistent with the essential job functions.


    Minimum Qualifications

    Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities which would typically be acquired through:

    • High school graduate or GED preferred;


    and

    • Two years of experience in general construction and maintenance, of which at least one year performing journey level concrete forming and finishing.


    Special Requirements:

    • Ability to pass drug test as mandated by the Department of Transportation
    • Possession of a valid California Class A driver's license at the time of appointment or ability to acquire during the first six months of employment.


    Working Conditions / Physical Requirements

    • Construction site environment; exposure to dust and noise; lifting, standing, climbing and kneeling; work in inclement weather conditions.
