The Marin County Department of Finance is responsible for the powers and duties of the offices of the auditor, controller, tax collector, treasurer, and public administrator. We serve as a collaborative partner and fiscal advisor to the County government in their consideration of fiscal decisions and planning. ABOUT THE POSITIONUnder the direction of the Accounting Unit Manager, the Accountant I/II performs a variety of professional level accounting work requiring a strong understanding of accounting, auditing, and reconciliation principles and practices. The Accountant I/II also interprets and explains existing accounting and fiscal policies and procedures, and is responsible for preparing, reconciling, reviewing, and analyzing complex accounting records and reports.
Accountant I (0370A) This is the entry and first working level in this professional accounting series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn public agency, County and departmental accounting systems and practices. As experience is gained, duties become more diversified and are performed under more general supervision. This class is alternately staffed with Accountant II and incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency which meet the qualifications of the higher-level class.
Accountant II (0370) This is the experienced or journey-level class in the professional accountant series, fully competent to perform the full range of accounting and financial support duties. Successful performance of the work requires considerable knowledge of governmental accounting principles and practices and the ability to exercise sound independent judgment within established guidelines. This class is distinguished from Senior Accountant in that the latter is the advanced journey level responsible for performing the most complex professional accounting work and may provide lead direction to professional and support staff within a specified division, a special district or on an organization level.
There is currently one (1) full-time (37.5 hours/week)vacancy) in the Treasurer’s Office of the Department of Finance that will be filled at the Accountant I or II level. Candidates will be considered for the level(s) for which they meet minimum qualifications.ABOUT YOUOur Highly Qualified Candidate is an excellent communicator in both written and verbal communication to internal and external audiences. We are looking for someone able to prepare and maintain accurate records, analyze data, and perform research and reconciliation functions. They need to be highly proficient with spreadsheets and have proven experience with originating and reconciling financial transactions. This person can clearly articulate and document appropriate accounting methodologies to be utilized in reconciling and recording bank and clearing account transactions, as well as confidently navigate Enterprise financial accounting systems. The ideal candidate is experienced in the processing and knowledge of governmental accounting and has exposure to a banking or treasury environment. They are organized, dependable, accurate, and able to work independently and as a team. Proficiency with Tyler Munis or other large automated financial systems is highly desirable.

- Maintain accurate records and files.
- Explain technical data to non-technical user staff.
- Plan, schedule, assign, direct and review the work of support staff or volunteers.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES
Accountant I Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university with at least 12 semester or 18 quarter units in accounting. Additional professional or technical accounting experience may be substituted for the education on a year-for-year basis, provided there is no substitution for the accounting units. Education or experience in using automated accounting systems and spreadsheets is highly desirable.
Salary Range for Accountant I: $72,325.50 - $86,073.00 AnnuallyAccountant II (in addition to the above) Two years of professional accounting experience. Experience in a public agency setting and within the specific area of assignment is highly desirable.
Salary Range for Accountant II: $84,006.00 - $100,483.50 AnnuallySpecial Requirements: The successful candidate will be required to successfully complete a background investigation.
