    Description

    Receives and processes permit applications for new construction, alteration and repair work on commercial and residential projects. Provides courteous and professional customer service.

    Examples of Duties

    • Greets customers and provides professional and courteous customer service; explains permitting procedures to the public as needed.
    • Answers phone and directs customer to the appropriate department/person.
    • Prepares and distributes/mails permit packets upon request.
    • Receives, processes and tracks permit applications.
    • Assesses, receives and receipts permit fees.
    • Verifies permits for accuracy prior to issuing.
    • Issues Building permits and accessory permits. Accepts and processes information on Certified Contractors.
    • Assists in compiling data and information as needed for inspections, reports and meetings.
    • Locates properties on maps as requested.
    • May accept documentation, processes information and issues licenses for Registered Contractors reciprocating from other Florida Counties/Cities.
    • May prepare and distribute/mail renewal license requirements to Registered and Specialty Contractors annually.
    • Performs a variety of routine clerical duties as required, which include but are not limited to typing reports and correspondence, entering computer data, preparing mailings, answering the telephone, copying and filing documents, etc.
    • Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as immediate supervisor, subordinates, co-workers, County personnel, contractors, architects, engineers, property owners, Government agencies, utility companies, vendors and the general public.
    • Operates a variety of equipment, which include a computer, fax machine, typewriter, copier, calculator, telephone, laminator, etc.
    • Attends and remains at work regularly and adheres to policies and procedures regarding absenteeism and tardiness. Provides adequate notice to higher management with respect to vacation time and leave requests.
    • Performs other duties as required and other job-related duties as requested by supervisor.

    Typical Qualifications

    Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by two (2) to three (3) years of general clerical or customer service experience or any equivalent combination of training, education or work experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. May require a valid State Driver’s License.

    Supplemental Information

    • Knowledge of the methods, policies and procedures of the Department and County as they pertain to the performance duties of the Permit Specialist.
    • Ability to comprehend, interpret and apply regulations, procedures and related information.
    • Knowledge in customer service, bookkeeping and clerical skills.
    • Knowledge of modern office practices and equipment.
    • Knowledge of proper English usage, punctuation, spelling and grammar.
    • Ability to perform required mathematical calculations.
    • Ability to type accurately at a rate sufficient for the successful performance of assigned duties.
    • Ability to operate and maintain a variety of office equipment as necessary in the performance of daily activities.
    • Ability to use a computer for word processing and records maintenance.
    • Ability to prepare routine reports and correspondence with accuracy and in a timely manner.
    • Ability to read and interpret various materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job.
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality as required.
    • Ability to use independent judgment in performing routine and non-routine tasks.
    • Ability to offer assistance to co-workers and employees of other Department’s as required.
    • Ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency.
    • Ability to perform duties in a courteous manner and with the utmost integrity in the best interest of the public.
    • Ability to work under stressful conditions as required.
    • Ability to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.
