DESCRIPTION

THE CITY OF PLACENTIA FIRE & LIFE SAFETY DEPARTMENT IS CURRENTLY RECRUITING FOR THE POSITION OF PART-TIME FIREFIGHTER

$23.11- $28.52 per hour, 24-Hour Work Shifts

This is a PART-TIME, NON-BENEFITTED, AT-WILL POSITION.

Part-time Firefighters may not respond to Auto/Mutual Aid or Master Mutual aid incidents.

Part-time Firefighters must complete 1 year of service AND complete a comprehensive training program including live fire to be eligible for any IDLH operations.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Under general supervision, responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls to protect life and property; participates in fire prevention programs and inspections; station and apparatus maintenance; training activities; and performs other related work as assigned.

  • Performs full range of fire safety activities, including placing fire hoses, setting ladders, operating fire streams, and other Fire Department equipment, ventilate and enter burning structures to extinguish fires and rescue victims.
  • Conducts and performs rescue, ventilation, overhaul, salvage, and clean-up activities at fire scene.
  • Administers emergency aid and assists in emergency incidents.
  • Performs basic fire prevention, inspection, and code enforcement duties, including life safety inspections.
  • Performs support and maintenance activities such as servicing fire hydrants, fire equipment and repairs.
  • Keeps abreast of current firefighting methods and operations and departmental policies and procedures, which may include but not limited to fire procedural manuals involving fire codes and emergency response guide (ERG).
  • Conducts public education and information activities including assisting in the preparation and dissemination of informational materials and making presentations.
  • Performs fire apparatus or other fire related equipment repair and maintenance.


TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience
Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a High School diploma or GED equivalency. Associate's degree is highly desirable.

Experienced firefighters who have completed a probationary period as a full-time career firefighter is highly desirable .

License or Certification:
  • Possession of or the ability to obtain a valid Class C California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.
  • Proof of having completed a State Certified Firefighter Academy or equivalent training program.
  • Must have successfully passed the CPAT or Biddle physical agility exam prior to appointment. Verification will be required and must be dated within 1 year of application.
  • Possess and maintain a valid California Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) License.
  • Possess American Heart Association or Red Cross BLS CPR & First Aid for Healthcare Providers Certification.

Highly Desirable Certifications/Qualifications:

Possession of the California State Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) Firefighter 2 (2013 or 2019) .

Individuals who have certification as a Firefighter I OR Firefighter II for the State of California.

Out of State and Department of Defense applicants who possess an equivalent with the ability to obtain reciprocity with the California State Fire Marshal will also be accepted.

Knowledge of:
  • Procedures and equipment used in modern firefighting, emergency medical, and other response operations.
  • Operational characteristics of emergency response vehicles, fire suppression apparatus and equipment.
  • Principles and practices of basic firefighting activities, firefighting methods, fire prevention, fire inspection and emergency medical procedures.
  • Being familiarized with fire prevention and inspection practices as identified in the California Fire Code (CFC).
  • Overhaul and salvage operations.
  • Basic equipment and tools related to fire operations.

Skills and Ability to:
  • Be trained, instructed, and supervised in all aspects of firefighting, fire prevention, fire inspection, emergency medical procedures, and related activities.
  • Operate heavy machinery and firefighting equipment.
  • Function effectively in emergency situations.
  • Perform a wide variety of strenuous fire suppression activities, including hazardous material incidents.
  • Demonstrate physical endurance, agility, strength, and stamina in the performance of hazardous tasks under emergency conditions.
  • Observing and following safe work practices.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Operate basic modern office equipment, including personal computers.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all levels of City employees, community organizations, and the public.

In accordance with California Government Code Section 3100, City of Placentia employees, in the event of a disaster, are considered disaster service workers and may be asked to protect the health, safety, lives, and property of the people of the State.

Retirement - California Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS) PST Deferred Compensation Plan. Contribution to this account is 7.5% per pay period, the City pays 3.75% and the employee pays 3.75% deducted from salary. Additionally, employee pays 1.45% towards Medicare per paycheck.

Part-Time Alternative Health and Wellness (AHW) Leave -Sick leave equivalent accrues at 1 hour per 30 hours worked, max 40 hours per year, max accrual bank of 80 hours.
