Recreation Specialist - Athletics

General Description and Classification Standards

This job is responsible for coordinating assigned athletic programs and activities. Duties include developing, planning, organizing, and supervising diversified athletic programs. Oversees and ensures the proficient operation of assigned athletic programs. Duties also include assisting with other department programs as needed. Reports to the Athletics Director.

Supervision Received

Works under minimal supervision; can set own work sequence and pace within process/department limitations.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. May perform other duties as assigned.
  • Plans, organizes, and implements comprehensive recreation programs for all age groups in sports and other related recreational programing.
  • Develops, plans and organizes required athletic teams, leagues and tournaments for all age groups by working with volunteers and staff.
  • Prepares budgets to meet program needs, documents expenditures, etc.
  • Orders, distributes, and inventories all equipment and uniforms for assigned athletic programs.
  • Prepares and submits promotional materials such as calendars, flyers, brochures, program agenda, memoranda, etc.
  • Ensures that department facilities and sports equipment are properly used for such programs and maintained in good condition during the season.
  • Attends various workshops and meetings; council advisory meetings, staff meetings, interacts with community groups and the public in the performance of job duties.
  • Recruits and maintains volunteers for athletic programs.
  • Maintains public relations by answering incoming calls and interacting with general public. Appropriately addresses parental and participant concerns and inquiries.
  • Prepares various documentation, participant reports, time sheets, and other reports related to the Parks and Recreation Department.
  • May act as a coach, scorekeeper, umpire, referee, official, etc. as needed in administering athletic programs.
  • May serve as liaison for City of Atlanta with various local and national recreation associations such as the Georgia Recreation and Park Association.

Selects from multiple procedures and methods to accomplish tasks. Establishes work methods, timetables, performance standards, etc. May interpret organizational policies and recommend exceptions. May make purchasing or resource allocation decisions within organization guidelines.

Leadership Provided

Routinely provides work group leadership, guidance, and/or training to less experienced staff.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities This is a partial listing of necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job successfully. It is not an exhaustive list.

Knowledge of the City and the Parks/Recreation and Cultural Affairs operations and functions. Knowledge of all applicable laws, ordinances, policies, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the job. Knowledge of how to develop and administer operations and staff plans and objectives for the expedience and effectiveness of specific duties of the City. Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to assemble information and make written reports and documents in a concise, clear and effective manner. Skill in the use of Microsoft Office software to include Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Ability to develop and administer policies, procedures, plans and activities and to monitor performance of subordinates against measured established goals. Ability to effectively communicate and interact with, management, employees, and members of the general public. Ability to use independent judgment and discretion in managing subordinates including the handling of emergency situations, determining and deciding upon procedures to be implemented, setting priorities, maintaining standards, and resolving problems. Ability to read, understand and interpret personnel and financial reports and related materials.

Minimum Qualifications - Education and Experience

Associate degree in recreation, physical education or related field (Equivalent professional experience may be considered for substitution for the required degree on an exception basis).

1 year of recreational experience.

Preferred Qualifications - Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in recreation, physical education or related field plus 3-4 years' of related experience, including some supervisory and/or managerial experience.

Licensures and Certifications

Must be certified in CPR and First Aid.

Must maintain a valid Drivers license.
