Job Description

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Clark County Department of Family Services is seeking qualified candidates to apply for the Child Development Technician position. This position provides physical care, emotional nurturing, and supervision to abused, neglected, and abandoned children sheltered at Child Haven assuring their safety, permanency, and wellbeing. The Child Development Technician also assists in the assessment of children and development and implementation of treatment plans for individual children by identifying children's special needs.

This examination will establish an Open Competitive Eligibility list to fill current and/or future vacancies that may occur within the next six (6) months or may be extended as needed by Human Resources.

Human Resources reserves the right to call only the most qualified applicants to the selection process.

Some positions may be used to fill term Limited-Permanent positions. The selected candidates will be hired for a special project or duties of a limited duration and be required to sign a term of employment letter specifying condition and exact dates of employment. The successful selected candidates will be eligible for benefits during the duration of employment.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience:

Associate's Degree in Behavioral Science, Child Development, Counseling, Early Childhood Education, Education, Health Science, Human Services, Nursing, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, or Special Education, or a closely related field. Equivalent combination of education or directly related experience working with and caring for juveniles, preferably in a child welfare, social service, juvenile justice, residential treatment or other nurturing setting may be considered.

Working Conditions: Work evening, night, weekend and holiday shifts. Work with exposure to infectious or contagious diseases. Work with abused, neglected, and abandoned children ages 0-17 years.

Licensing and Certification: Must possess a valid Nevada Class C driver's license at time of appointment. Possess or obtain all licensing certifications required to work in a licensed child care institution.

Background Investigation: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation. Periodically after employment background investigations may be conducted.

Pre-Employment Drug Testing: Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre-employment drug examination.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Provide on-going physical care, emotional nurturing and daily supervision of abused, neglected, and abandoned children ages 0-17 years. Performs initial assessment of admitted youths to Child Haven to determine potential risk to themselves and others. Assesses child's behavior and assists Senior Child Development Specialist in developing treatment plans to modify targeted behaviors. Serves as a contributing team member in case planning and placement planning for children; facilitates, supervises and documents parental and sibling visitation; uses various assessment and screening tools to identify needs and strengths of children and families; uses sound case planning and therapeutic activities; uses case management activities of providing, coordinating and facilitating needed services and interventions. Identifies and responds to children's needs, including hunger and illness; orients children to Child Haven and assists them in adjusting to the new environment. Implements treatment plans, provides feedback, and makes suggestions for modification, as necessary through routine observations of children's behavior and their adjustment to the cottage. Recognizes and reports conditions related to medically fragile or developmentally delayed infants and toddlers. Utilizes CHATTA model in order to "pre-teach" skills to children. Intervenes when children are out of control, using authorized strategies. Monitors parental visits with children. Feeds, bathes and dresses infants and toddlers. Ensures appropriate hygiene, attire and nutrition. Conducts and records bed checks. Performs housekeeping duties as necessary. Directs the work of part-time staff and volunteers. Maintains daily behavioral records and reports, records of work performed, prepares incident reports and logs progress of development plans in the case management system. Develops and implements a variety of social and recreational programs for the children. Consults with other professional staff regarding children. Transports children to hospitals, admits children to hospital. Diffuses hostile situations between parents and/or children. Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team. Performs various office and administrative support duties, including the operation of standard office equipment. Reads, interprets and administers medical instructions. Makes reports to child abuse and neglect Hotline as a mandated reporter. Drives a County motor vehicle in order to attend off-site meetings, visit job sites, and transport children.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Mobility to work in a treatment shelter home and office setting, use standard home appliances and office equipment, and to drive a motor vehicle in order to transport children; strength to lift, carry children; vision to read printed materials; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone.
