Job Description

What You'll Be Doing

Economic Services is one of the six function areas within the Wake County Department of Social Services. The primary responsibility of this area is to provide benefits such as Medicaid, Food and Nutrition Services, Work First, Child Care Subsidy, and Energy Services for the citizens of Wake County as accurately and as timely as possible. We are currently seeking an Eligibility Caseworker I to join our team! The Family and Children Medicaid (FCMA) - Eligibility Caseworker I will determine initial or ongoing eligibility for FMCA for new applications or re-determinations (or reviews) of ongoing cases. The FCMA Eligibility Caseworker interviews individuals either by phone or in person to obtain the necessary information to determine eligibility.

Daily responsibilities:
  • Assessing client's situation and provide appropriate information about economic benefits
  • Referrals to community resources and other services
  • Enter all required data into computer system in order to authorize benefits
  • Requests the verification needed to determine eligibility according to program policy
  • Evaluates the information provided and makes eligibility determination
  • Must meet established performance standards regarding quantity and quality of work
  • Responsible for providing back up to other case managers
  • Work reports, provide accurate and timely documentation
  • Utilize document management system for caseload management

The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

  • High school degree or GED
  • Two years of related experience
  • Valid Driver's License and "safe" driving record
  • Equivalent education and experience are accepted

Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)

  • Previous experience determining eligibility for a State or County Department of Social Services program (Medicaid, Food and Nutrition Services, Work First, Child Care Subsidy, Child Support, WIC or Energy Assistance Program)
  • Experience as a Human Services Technician role supporting any Human Services program in a county or state Department of Human Services or Social Services agency
  • Experience determining eligibility for a Financial or Insurance Provider for financial assistance or insurance claims
  • Ability to access the financial capabilities and need for financial assistance
  • Direct clerical or customer services support to a Medicaid, Food and Nutrition Services, Work First, or Child Care Subsidy Program within a State or County Department of Social Services -Experience working with the homeless population
  • Spanish language skills preferred but not required
