Essential Job Functions

A PRINCIPAL ENGINEERING GEOLOGY ASSISTANT is responsible for performing a combination of the following essential job functions:

  • Assists in conducting engineering geology investigations by determining needs and requirements pertaining to the investigation reviewing and interpreting of geologic and environmental materials, preparing cost estimates and/or analyzing proposals for investigations.
  • Provides construction services by preparing memos for all construction projects; assists in reviewing design plans, specifications, and conducts in-construction inspections for a variety of construction projects to ensure compliance with geotechnical/environmental requirements and recommendations.
  • Assists in ensuring the technical integrity of developments (e.g., single family, multi-family, commercial, subdivision) by reviewing engineering reports, reviewing grading and/or building plans and ensuring the integration of consultant’s recommendations; conducts site visits and makes assessments of site conditions, compliance to the plan and/or plan revisions to ensure completed grading conforms to plans, in compliance with professional geologic and/or engineering practices, industry standards, building code, applicable State regulations and County policies.
  • Leads lower-level staff (e.g., Engineering Geology Assistants, Senior Engineering Geology Assistants) by providing routine technical guidance, training and mentorship and assuming limited responsibilities of a higher-level supervisor in their absence. Prepares and reviews reports (e.g., engineering geology, geotechnical, Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessment) by gathering and organizing information obtained from various sources and ensuring compliance with professional geotechnical practices, applicable State regulations and County policies.

  • Interacts with variety of individuals (e.g., subordinate staff, peers, management, public) by communicating information verbally or in writing, participating in project meetings, discussions, and other communications with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Employs safe work practices by wearing protective equipment, attending Division Quarterly Safety Meetings; reading safety handouts, safety data sheets, policies, memos, and adhering to departmental, Federal, State, County/Local Laws, safety rules, policies, and procedures.


Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Training and Experience:
Three years of professional engineering geology experience independently investigating, analyzing, and making recommendations for the solution of geological problems encountered in the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of structures.

LICENSE:
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

PHYSICAL CLASS:
Physical Class III - Moderate: Includes standing, or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.
