The Department of Agriculture/Weights & Measures is recruiting for Agricultural Field Aides I who place and service a variety of pest detection traps, examine collected specimens for target species, submit unknown and target specimens for confirming identification, and perform other duties related to detecting pests on public and private property.

The current vacancy exists in San Bernardino. The resulting eligible list may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur throughout the County.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

San Bernardino County is the largest county in the continental United States at approximately 20,000 square miles. The Department of Agriculture/Weights & Measures conducts regulatory programs and provides related services to protect the agriculture industry, business and consumers in San Bernardino County through fair and equitable application and enforcement of laws and regulations. The programs are designed to protect and promote the health and welfare of the general public.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Physical: Incumbents must sit, stand, bend, squat, kneel, twist and stoop. Requires grasping and fine manipulation in both hands. Incumbents must also be able to lift and hold items weighing five (5) pounds suspended on a 6-foot pole away from the body and visually ascertain color and small details/objects. Frequently reach above shoulder level. Occasionally lift and carry up to sixty (60) pounds.

Travel: Travel throughout the County is required. Employees may be provided a County car to use in performance of duties. At time of hire, a valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be produced and maintained for the individual providing the transportation.

Work Schedule: Shift availability for 4/10 (4 days per week/10 hours per day) work schedule.

Pre-Employment Process: Prior to appointment, applicants must undergo a background check, which includes fingerprints and medical exam.

Minimum Requirements

Candidate must meet the Experience OR Education requirement.

EXPERIENCE OPTION: One (1) year of full-time equivalent paid or volunteer work experience that includes extensive public contact.
EDUCATION OPTION: Associate's degree from an accredited college in Agriculture, Science, or Mathematics.

Desired Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess one (1) or more college level class(es) in Entomology or closely related field and at least three (3) months of experience working with the identification/trapping of insects, conducting pest surveys or performing professional pest control activities. Candidate will have experience conducting high-degree of work independently with minor supervision.
