The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, California State University Fullerton ( http://chemistry.fullerton.edu ) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in organic chemistry at the Assistant Professor level, to begin in August 2024.

Position
The successful candidates will be expected to teach and mentor a diverse student population, initiate and sustain an active research program involving undergraduate and master’s students and devote time to engaging in departmental, college, and university service. New faculty receive start-up funds, research lab space, and reduced instructional workload over their first two years to establish a research program. Multiple avenues exist for professional development, including learning communities, individually tailored mentoring, and equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) related initiatives.

Required Qualifications
To be considered qualified for this position, the applicants must have:
  • a Ph.D. in organic chemistry or a closely related field, and relevant postdoctoral experience at the time of appointment.
  • a strong commitment to and demonstrated potential for effective teaching using student-centered, active learning and inquiry-based approaches. Teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate and graduate-level organic chemistry lectures and laboratory courses.
  • a record of research productivity in organic chemistry or closely related fields.
  • a demonstrated potential for developing and sustaining an independent, funded research program involving undergraduate and master’s level students leading to peer-reviewed publications.
  • the ability to communicate with and effectively mentor an ethnically and culturally diverse campus population.

The Department
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry ( http://chemistry.fullerton.edu ) comprises 16 full-time, tenured/tenure-track faculty with over 400 undergraduate majors and 35 master’s students. Degrees offered are the BA in Chemistry, BS in Chemistry, and BS in Biochemistry, with optional emphasis in Environmental Chemistry, and the MS in Chemistry (which includes chemistry and biochemistry subspecialties). From lecture and laboratory courses in biochemistry, organic, analytical, inorganic, and physical chemistry to specialized courses, our students are exposed to a wide, interdisciplinary knowledge base.

The Department is located in two buildings - McCarthy Hall and Dan Black Hall that house a growing inventory of major instrumentation ( https://www.fullerton.edu/chemistry/research/Facilities.php ). A broad variety of modern, research-grade instruments and facilities are available and shared within the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. Faculty in the department have successfully obtained extramural funding from various agencies, including NSF, NIH, the ACS Petroleum Research Fund, and others. The University also houses program grants supporting students in specific undergraduate research programs, such as NIH-URISE and NIH-MHIRT, and LSAMP. Some faculty members in the department are active in the Center for Applied Biotechnology whereas others are involved in centers concerned with computational and applied mathematics and discipline-based science/chemistry education research.

The University and College
The California State University system produces nearly half of California's bachelor's degrees and around 6% of the nation's bachelor's degrees each year. Compensation
The Assistant Professor (Academic Year) classification salary range is $5,405 to $11,994 monthly (12 monthly payments per academic year). The anticipated hiring range is $6,856 to $7,000 per month.

Salary offered is commensurate with experience and qualifications. Summer research grants, moving expenses, start-up funds, and a reduced teaching load may be available.
