California State Polytechnic University, Pomona invites applications for a tenure track, assistant professor position in the Department of Psychology. Cal Poly Pomona is one of three polytechnic universities in the 23-campus California State University system and among 12 such institutions nationwide. Student Population. California residents comprise the majority (96%) of applicants to undergraduate programs at Cal Poly Pomona, and 41% of new students were transfers in Fall 2022. 57% of Cal Poly Pomona students are first generation, 70% receive financial aid, and 44% qualify as Pell-eligible. The university enrolls a diverse student body that identifies as 53% Latinx, 22% Asian, 14% White, 3% Black, 2% International, 4% two or more races, 3% unknown and less than 1% Native Hawaiian or Native Pacific Islander and less than 1% Native American Indigenous. Thirty-nine percent of the student body were STEM majors with the top enrolled programs including psychology, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, biology and computer science.

Department

The Department of Psychology consists of 17 tenured/tenure track faculty. The department offers a general undergraduate degree in Psychology and an MS in Psychology intended to prepare students for licensure as Marriage and Family Therapists. The Psychology Department includes a diverse and inclusive group of faculty and students. Faculty in the department strive to create a warm, welcoming, and collegial environment. This commitment is mirrored in our active student Psi Chi club, which garners high levels of student involvement and welcomes prospective members at every meeting. Faculty engagement with students is highly valued, and faculty are especially encouraged to include students at all stages of the research process. In general, the psychology student population is more diverse than the general campus population with 65% URM students compared to 50% for CPP overall.

Position

The position requires excellence in teaching and advising, professional and scholarly achievements, and service to the department, university, and community. The faculty member will have the opportunity to teach courses on a variety of topics in social psychology OR quantitative psychology and be willing to teach undergraduate research methods and statistics. The successful candidate will demonstrate sensitivity to issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion, including race, ethnicity, gender, class, age, religion, disability, documentation status, and sexuality. The faculty member will be able to pursue scholarship in their area of specialization and may collaborate with the CPP Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory, which houses equipment to measure brain activity (e.g., EEG).

Minimum requirements include:
  • Ph.D. in Social or Quantitative Psychology or a closely related field by the time of appointment;
  • Evidence of potential to be successful at university teaching;
  • Ability to teach a broad range of courses in the field of Social OR Quantitative psychology;
  • Ability to teach courses in research methods or statistics;
  • Ability to contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through teaching, research, service, and fostering an inclusive environment;
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusivity and equity. Evidence should be provided in a Student Success Statement that responds to the prompt above - “Inclusive Excellence and Student Success”
  • Evidence of methodological OR statistical skills.
  • Evidence of scholarly potential.

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 1-year university teaching experience;
  • Evidence of strong methodological AND statistical skills
  • Ability to serve as an advisor and research mentor to a diverse undergraduate student body

Salary range for 9-month, Academic Year Appointment: $80,000-$82,400
