California State Polytechnic University, Pomona invites applications for a tenure track assistant professor faculty position in the Department of Civil Engineering. Cal Poly Pomona is one of three polytechnic universities in the 23-campus California State University system and among 12 such institutions nationwide. Student Population. California residents comprise the majority (96%) of applicants to undergraduate programs at Cal Poly Pomona, and 41% of new students were transfers in Fall 2022. 57% of Cal Poly Pomona students are first generation, 70% receive financial aid, and 44% qualify as Pell-eligible. The university enrolls a diverse student body that identifies as 53% Latinx, 22% Asian, 14% White, 3% Black, 2% International, 4% two or more races, 3% unknown and less than 1% Native Hawaiian or Native Pacific Islander and less than 1% Native American Indigenous. College of Engineering: The College of Engineering’s mission is to prepare students for industry and advanced studies by implementing an inclusive polytechnic philosophy through collaborative teamwork, innovation, entrepreneurship and professional integrity. The College offers 12 ABET-accredited undergraduate degrees and 7 Master’s degrees to over 6,500 students across seven academic departments that include: Aerospace Engineering, Chemical and Materials Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering Technology, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. Department of Civil Engineering: The Civil Engineering Department strives to be a leader in polytechnic education, where hands-on learning is the foundation of a broad-based educational experience. The Civil Engineering undergraduate program, one of the largest undergraduate programs in the nation in terms of student enrollment, currently has approximately 1,600 undergraduate students and 200 graduate students. A student body in the Civil Engineering Department consists of 49% Hispanic/Latino, 23% Asian, 15% White, and 13% others. The success of our undergraduate and graduate programs results from the solid curriculum that incorporates theory and practice in a learning-centered environment. Students are provided with opportunities to apply their knowledge in hands-on projects, collaborate with faculty members on research, and participate in valuable internships and service-learning programs.

Position description: A successful candidate is expected to have a focus on Civil Engineering Materials such as concrete, asphalt, and fiber composite with applications relevant to structural, geotechnical, pavement engineering, and sustainability. Successful candidates should have experience and training in sustainable cementitious materials, including magnetizable concrete for pavement and structural systems, using recycled and upcycled materials in concrete, asphalt, natural and man-made supplementary cementitious materials, etc. Faculty members will be expected to work across multiple program areas within and outside the department as we expand our focus on material and sustainability-related areas. Teaching assignments are based upon the needs of the department and may include lower division courses, upper division courses, as well as graduate level courses. The successful candidate is expected to collaborate with industry and universities and secure external grants to develop applied research projects.

Minimum requirements include:
    • Ph.D. in Civil Engineering by the date of appointment (Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.)

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
    • Specialization in on civil engineering materials or a relevant field such as Sustainability/LEED Accredited as it relates to Civil Engineering Materials
    • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE)
    • Evidence of college teaching activities (e.g., full-time/part-time instructor, teaching assistant, Lab experience) within the last three years
    • Evidence of a commitment to teaching excellence
    • Evidence of ongoing scholarly research in the field of civil engineering materials
    • Industry experience in Civil Engineering Material, Sustainability, or a closely related field
    • Demonstrated ability to develop lecture and laboratory curriculum.

    • Final candidates being interviewed are expected to make a presentation of creative work and a teaching demonstration to faculty and interact with students.
