Disability Resources Services is continuously building a pool of applicants interested in hourly-intermittent temporary employment. Positions are appointed for one year with the possibility of reappointment based on budget, operational needs, and job performance.
Under general supervision of the Director of Disability Resource Services, incumbents provide communication access real-time translating services (CART) to consumers such as Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing individuals, and/or other disabled individuals. The incumbens facilitate communication by using court reporting methods, a steno machine, real-time technology, software, and a laptop computer to create real-time word-for-word text of spoken English. The incumbents further facilitate communication by assisting consumers with concurrent participation in the communication process by voicing questions or comments that the consumer has entered into the system.
- Job Duties
- Duties include but are not limited to:
- Provide immediate verbatim translation of spoken English into text so the student can read the text on a laptop computer screen or other display devices as it is created.
- Provide a complete transcription of all spoken words and environmental cues.
- Provide the student with an electronic disk, e-mail, or hard copy version of the final, edited transcript as agreed upon with the student.
- Research technical terminology related to assignments and continually develop and modify custom software dictionaries.
- Prepare for comprehensive and accurate translation for specialized or technical assignments.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Minimum Qualifications
- Education : Formal training in court reporting and steno methods to meet position requirements is required, with graduation from a court reporting school preferred.
Experience : Typically six to twelve months of experience providing real-time captioning services, preferably in a high education setting, is necessary to perform at the level required for the translating assignments in the university setting.

- Graduation from a court reporting school and CSR licensure.
- A National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) Certification.
- At least two years experience providing real-time captioning in college/university classes.
- Additional postsecondary education may be necessary to fully comprehend and provide accurate translations of the language and vocabulary used in more complex academic, instructional, and/or administrative situations.
- Proficiency in computer-aided transcription (CAT) software
- Experience in post-secondary educational transcription.
- Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

- Thorough knowledge of court reporting methods and theories, real-time software and technology, real-time captioning computer systems and equipment, and the industry-recognized code of ethics.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the English language, including grammatical structures, syntax, spelling vocabulary, and punctuation.
- Working knowledge of the language and vocabulary used in the assigned translating situations.
- General knowledge of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Culture.
- Must be able to caption at a minimum rate of 180 or more words per minute with a high level of accuracy.
- Proficiently use, maintain, and troubleshoot court reporting steno equipment, real-time software, and computer systems and equipment.
- Develop, maintain, and proficiently use a thorough dictionary that enables accurate and fluid translation.
- Effectively listen for continuity, sense, and detail while translating.
- Proficiently write in real-time in a conflict-free manner using punctuation and sustaining accuracy in fast-paced stressful situations.
- Use advanced editing skills.
- Work effectively with consumers.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Special Conditions
- Because CART system software and dictionaries are highly customized, the incumbent must provide their own equipment and software including real-time-capable steno machine, laptop computer, current software for real-time translation, real-time cables, and other items for set up (e.g., extension cords, extra battery, power surge protector).

- Incumbents must be able to remain in a stationary position on a constant basis, communicate, converse, express, convey, and accurately exchange information.
- Must have the ability to travel from site to site on or off campus including traveling to the Stockton campus.
- Salary Range
- Anticipated salary will be $50 - $57 per hour. Salary will depend on the qualifications of the successful finalist. (Full range: $17.57 - $176.50 per hour.)
