ANTICIPATED HIRING RANGE: $4,180 - $5,000
  • However, offer amount will be commensurate with candidate’s experience, education, skills, and training.

POSITION PURPOSE: The School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics & Engineering’s (NSME) technical support staff play a critical role in supporting the School’s and CSUB’s mission, vision, and values. Under general supervision of the Dean of the School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics, & Engineering, and with daily lead direction from the department chair for Chemistry and Biochemistry, the Instructional Support Technician II offers comprehensive technical support by providing materials, supplies, chemicals, specimens, equipment-related logistical support, and technical expertise for a variety of lower and upper division laboratory courses, and research activities for the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Duties require an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the discipline, laboratory techniques and methods, etc.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Department Laboratory Course Support
  • Independently organize and schedule the preparation of biochemical and chemical materials, supplies, and technical and non-technical equipment for laboratory courses.
  • Prepare solutions and provide chemicals used in laboratory courses.
  • Work with faculty to assist in the development of new instructional offerings dependent on materials, supplies, and equipment support.
  • Serve as a knowledgeable resource regarding lab course materials and supplies for students and faculty.
  • Helps solve problems, and assists not only faculty, but also administration with planning new services or helping to facilitate administrative goals/projects.
  • Provide technical assistance and support to students and faculty on individual experiments/projects.
  • Applying thorough knowledge of chemistry and biochemistry, recognize commonalities between courses and develop systems for optimizing facilities and equipment uses.

Department Laboratory Maintenance and Supplies
  • Procure hard to find materials. Make direct purchases. Evaluate and determine quality and suitability of materials. Issue, store, and inventory materials, supplies and equipment.
  • Assist faculty and solve problems related to materials substitutions, costs, or new equipment using thorough knowledge of the discipline; evaluate and determine substitutions in emergencies.
  • Ensure the stockroom and laboratories are clean and orderly.
  • Adjust and calibrate technical equipment as needed.
  • Repair or arrange for repair and overhaul of equipment including technical and science equipment.
  • Act as a liaison with equipment technicians; communicate equipment needs or problems.
  • Solve shipping issues (backorders, time sensitive requests, alternatives of discontinued items).
  • Maintain records and prepare reports; maintain chemical inventories.
  • Take inventory of equipment (Property Custodian) and accessory items and maintain the electronic inventory database.
  • Conduct yearly audit of equipment and accessory items.
  • Dispose of hazardous waste in a proper and safe manner following applicable policies and procedures.

Ensure Safe Environment & Other Support Duties
  • Support and follow university safety protocols.
  • Handle, store, and dispose of chemical and biological hazardous waste in a safe and effective way.
  • Collaborate with the Chemical Hygiene Officer and NSME Lab Safety Coordinator.
  • Serve as a member of the campus emergency response team and the NSME Safety Committee.
  • Oversee student workers assisting in laboratories and stockroom.
  • Support student-faculty research.
  • Check out equipment and I-Clickers to students.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE - Equivalent to three (3) years of (recent - within three years) experience providing instructional support services a related discipline, or in producing materials or repairing equipment in a chemistry discipline related area.

OR: Equivalent two (2) years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment in chemistry or related discipline may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

OR: Equivalent to four (4) years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment in chemistry or related discipline may be substituted for two years of the required experience.

LICENSES -
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
  • Possession of or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire: 40-hour Hazardous Waste Worker (HAZWOPER) certification.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES (SKA’s) -
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the suitability of materials for related instructional needs.
  • Knowledge of principles of providing support services.
  • Thorough knowledge of the common principles, methods, and techniques applicable to courses in biochemistry, organic and inorganic chemistry, general chemistry, cell biology, genetics, molecular biology.
  • Thorough knowledge of the materials, supplies, and equipment and their uses related to the discipline.
  • Ability to evaluate the materials and supplies used.
  • Ability to learn to adjust and make minor repairs on scientific equipment.
  • Ability to operate scientific or highly technical equipment related to different biology and chemistry courses and to interpret results.
  • Ability to plan activities and prepare schedules.
  • Ability to use methods, techniques and skills related to the discipline in preparing specialized materials.
  • Ability to adapt to changing environments and demands, handle multiple projects simultaneously, and work independently.
  • Thorough knowledge of common safety procedures for handling and storage of chemicals used in laboratory preparations along with handling both bio-hazardous and hazardous chemical waste. •
  • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.
  • Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
  • Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
  • Ability to interpret, communicate and apply policies and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Excellent computer skills and competence with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, on-line systems, Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
  • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or related discipline is preferred.
  • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: HEAVY WORK - 50% or more of the activities involve walking, standing, squatting, kneeling or climbing; lifting heavy weight objects which may exceed 50 pounds.
