Major Duties Under general supervision, the Chemical Hygiene Coordinator/Lab Technician performs comprehensive support services for the Chemistry & Biochemistry department. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining and improving the chemical hygiene and laboratory safety standards and acts as a resource for solving problems.
- Performs regular inspections of instructional/research spaces and safety equipment, reports violations, reports accidents, reviews results, provides training, keeps records, and makes improvement recommendations to the Chair.
- Coordinates collection and safely bulks hazardous waste/biohazardous waste from research and instructional spaces, temporarily stores, and coordinates with Environmental Health & Safety to periodically pick up waste.
- Performs research and helps develop new instructional activities in conjunction with faculty and staff.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications - Equivalent to three years of full-time experience providing instructional support services for a related unit or discipline, or in handling materials or supplies in a discipline related to the area to which assigned; OR
- Equivalent to an Associate’s degree with at least 16 semester units in chemistry courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment in a related discipline may be substituted for one year of the required experience; OR
- Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree with at least 16 semester units in chemistry courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a related discipline may be substituted for two years of the required experience.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in chemistry/biochemistry, preferred.
- Two (2) years of experience in handling hazardous waste and experience with safety programs, rules and policies, preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities - Knowledge of the principles of performing support services; knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques related to chemical hygiene and laboratory safety and the curriculum; knowledge of the materials and supplies in the curriculum and their uses.
- Ability and specialized skills to: plan, organize, and schedule activities; ability to operate technical equipment related to the discipline; ability to safely coordinate hazardous waste collection, ability to provide safety training, ability to adhere to all applicable policies and laws, ability to maintain records; ability to adjust and perform simple maintenance of technical and scientific equipment; work independently and as part of a team under general supervision.
- Ability to work effectively and sensitively with culturally diverse constituencies; organize activities to achieve an end in a timely manner; work with attention to detail and exercise good judgment; recognize and solve problems; read, understand, interpret, and implement technical procedures and other written documents; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; provide good customer service; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.

- Classification: Instructional Support Tech II / 1617 / grade 1
- The anticipated HIRING RANGE: $4750 - $5200 per month, dependent upon qualifications and experience. The salary range for this classification is: $4389 - $7617 per month.
- HOURS: Full Time; 40 hours per week; Monday through Friday.
- This is a Regular position with a one-year probationary period.
