The homeownership rate is close to 65% and the housing market in Milpitas remains affordable relative to the majority of Santa Clara County.

Milpitas is at the heart of Silicon Valley and is often called the “Crossroads of Silicon Valley” with most of its 13.63 square miles of land situated between two major freeways (I-880 and I-680), State Route 237, and a County expressway. With existing light rail and BART extension opening in 2019, the transit hub adjacent to the Great Mall facilitated high density transit-oriented development with over 2,100 units being built. There are approximately 1,790 acres, or 2.9 square miles designated for various industrial uses.

An additional 350 acres are dedicated to regional and community retail centers supporting 3.5 million square feet of commercial shops. The Great Mall of the Bay Area is the largest enclosed mall in Northern California, with approximately 1.1 million square feet of leasable space for retail and entertainment operations. Several local shopping centers service regional needs including Asian-oriented retail and services. The City provides a multitude of outstanding recreational opportunities, including aquatics, cultural arts and theater, sports leagues and activities, youth and senior programming and activities.

THE CITY GOVERNMENT

Incorporated in 1954, the City of Milpitas is a bustling general-law city supervised by a council-manager form of government. Milpitas is a full-service city which includes Police, Fire, and a water utility and sewer utility. The Council makes planning and policy decisions for residents, and oversees the City’s $253.2 million budget. Issues currently challenging the City include development, quality of life, and traffic.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The City of Milpitas seeks an enthusiastic individuals to join the Recreation and Community Services Department as Recreation Leaders for the After the Bell and LYFE School Programs. You may be required to work nights, weekends and holidays. You must be able to work between the hours of 2:00pm - 6:00pm daily and possibly as early as 12:30pm on minimum school days.

Examples of Duties

Under direct supervision of the Recreation Leader IV, Recreation Leader V and Program Coordinator, Recreation Leaders will lead students in grades 1-6 for After the Bell and 13-15 for LYFE in activities, games and other recreational activities at various school sites.

The City of Milpitas Recreation and Community Services Department wants enthusiastic, problem solvers that have the ability to communicate well and provide excellent customer service skills to the community and our residents.

This position is part of the After the Bell Program and provides support at various elementary school sites. Recreation Leaders work with students in grades 1-6 for After the Bell and 7-9 for LYFE in after school activities, structured games, and homework assistance. Other assignments provide support to the Milpitas Teen Center, leading activities of the same sort with teenage students.

The essential functions of this position include knowledge and/or experience working and/or supervising school age children ages 5-15 years old, lead games and activities, coordinate and implement daily activities. Recreation Leaders must be able to lead participants, communicate activity objectives and rules clearly and effectively; provide information and direction to a wide variety of age groups, conduct games and activities following established rules, guidelines, and time limits; learn, retain and use safety rules and regulations; provide verbal and summarized written feedback on activities; supervise students.

Incumbents must be able to multitask in a fast pace work environment. You must also be able to work independently off site and with other co-workers in compliance with City Rules and Regulations. Recreation Leaders may also be invited to work in additional areas including special events and other program areas within the Recreation and Community Services Department.

Typical Qualifications

• Minimum age at time of hire is 16 years old for

• Must have experience in working with school age children (5-15 years old)

• Must have current certification in American Red Cross First Aid and CPR, or within 60 days of hire date

License and Other Requirements

Upon selection, additional requirements include:

- Tuberculosis test

- Valid Social Security card

- Fingerprint clearance (Department of Justice background check) if 18 years or older

Retirement Benefits
Federal law requires that employees who are not members of the City retirement plan (CalPERS) be covered under an alternate retirement plan (PARS).
6% of your salary will be deducted for participation in the PARS plan. The City will also contribute 1.5% of your earnings to your PARS account every pay period.

Paid Time Off
In accordance with State Law, after 90 days, Temporary/Seasonal employees receive 24 hours to use for sick leave.

Work and Life
Temporary/Seasonal employees are eligible for membership at the Milpitas Sports Center.
