Position Information

The California State University, Office of the Chancellor, is seeking a Director of Strategic Analytics to be responsible for management, and development, and achievement of significant strategic analytics efforts related analytic assignments that inform California State University policies, Chancellor's Office priorities, campus constituencies, state and federal offices, and the public at large through original analytic programming, constructs, and works. The incumbent informs CSU and external decision- and policymakers through detailed analyses, presentations, and in-depth discussions on topics of varying complexity related to federal, state, and CSU mandates and goals.


Under the general direction of the AVC for Institutional Research and Analyses, the Director of Strategic Analytics will:

- Guides development, enhances quality of content, and ensures alignment of data repository solutions (data-lake, data-warehouse, normed reporting assets, etc.) that are critical for the smooth functioning of Institutional Research and Analyses Department work. Identifies and initiates efforts to augment existing CSU assets with primary source external data assets.

-Guides, enhances development and use by IR&A of data visualization, business intelligence, and analytical solutions to increase decision maker access to normed census and annual reporting of CSU facts. Develops solutions that provide timely access to CSU facts.

-Participates in the development, establishment, and execution of departmental vision and goals as part of the IR&A leadership team. Identifies challenges and suggests actions to better IR&A, the division, and the university.

-Develops original complex analytic programming, constructs, and works to address informational needs, identify opportunities for institutional improvement, and to lead discussions that inform decisions of IR&A clients

-Provides, presents, and leads exchanges of analytic ideas that inform CSU decision and policymakers.

-Develops, elevates, and grows staff talent to amplify IR&A capacity.

-Develops, tests, validates and uses models for evaluations, forecasts, predictions, and projections. Participates in the development of and formation of projections that inform enrollment management and system IR&A topic related CSU budget development efforts. Functions as primary contact for IR&A efforts to inform academic affairs discussions and decisions.

-Represents CSU IR&A interests and provides insights at CSU, state, and federal meetings/discussions reflecting on strategic use of analytic data.

-Interacts on a national and state level in the exchange of analytic ideas and concepts with peers from other systems of education. Leverages ideas from beyond the CSU for its betterment.


This position requires:

- A bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university or equivalent combination or related experience is required to include a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in a related area of research involving review of policies, planning, and accountability, or in data systems analysis.

- Expected background includes experience working with quantitative data and experience in higher education, psychometrics, public policy formation, data science, statistics, economics, information systems, computer science, mathematics, or quantitative social science research.

-Experience with data analytic strategies and optimizing outcomes/analyses.

-Proficiency in one or more of the following statistical packages: SAS, SPSS, STATA, R.

-Proficiency in one or more of the following Business Intelligence software tools: Tableau, Microsoft Power BI, Amazon QuickSight (Tableau currently used by department).

Preferred Qualifications

- Preferred educational backgrounds include advanced degree or work in higher education, psychometrics, public policy formation, information systems, computer science, mathematics, statistics, economics, or in quantitative social science research. Possession of a doctorate is desirable; education and experience comparable to an advanced degree is preferred. Experience in educational research is preferred.
