THE POSITION The City of Ventura Public Works Department is hiring a Facilities Maintenance Worker I/II . WHAT YOU'LL DO The Facilities Maintenance Worker I/II performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled construction, installation, maintenance and repair work on municipal buildings and equipment. Under immediate supervision, incumbents perform entry to journey-level work in one or two trades and are expected to work at an increasing skill level in all of the trades utilized by the Facilities Maintenance Section. Under this training concept, incumbents are expected to advance to the Facilities Maintenance Worker II level. Facilities Maintenance Worker II is the journey-level class in the facilities maintenance series. Under general supervision, work is performed at a level approaching journey level skills in all the skilled trades utilized by the Facilities Maintenance Section including electrical, carpentry, plumbing, heating ventilation and air conditioning, and painting trades as well as at the full journey level in one or more trades. Position Description Final Filing Date : Monday, April 8, 2024 Exam# 24/74E31/03JA The Public Works, Facilities & Parks Department (PWFP) brings together a range of functions to ensure safe building construction, plan for the future needs of the County, manage infrastructure and county facilities, and protect natural resources. The Department is responsible for public works, county roads and bridges, county parks, and county facilities. Under general supervision, the Senior Bridge Maintenance Worker act as lead worker and to do semi-skilled and skilled work of widely varying difficulty in the maintenance of bridges and related structures, and to do other work as required. The Eligible List established by this recruitment process may be used to fill current and future vacancies on a regular full-time, part-time, or temporary basis County-wide. This classification is part of a flexible series. Incumbents appointed at the lower level of the career series may be promoted up to the higher level of the career series subject to their meeting the employment standards for the higher class and a recommendation for their promotion by the appointing authority. Examples of Duties Build form, repairs decking, stringers, braces guardrails, headers and floorboards. Operates cranes, backhoes and other heavy maintenance equipment. Supervises and participates in pouring and finishing of concrete; builds and installs concrete structures such as culverts and drainage pipes. Cuts, ties, bends, and places steel bridge members; welds and fabricates steel. Drives truck and trailer units hauling materials or equipment and operates other construction equipment. Serves as lead worker over a maintenance crew; read and interprets blueprints and plan; does layout work for carpentry and welding and instructs subordinates accordingly. To view the complete job description, visit the Monterey County website: Senior Bridge Maintenance Worker THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE Will have a proven track record demonstrating the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: Thorough Knowledge of: Methods, materials, and tools used in the maintenance and construction of bridges. Methods, tools and techniques used in carpentry, painting, sandblasting, welding and cement finishing. Methods used in operating light to heavy, complex construction equipment and small hand and power tools. Some Knowledge of: Basic math sufficient to keep time cards and service records, to take and calculate measurements, to interpret plans and blueprints and do layout work. Skill and Ability to: Skillfully and safely operate small hand and power tools and light to heavy, complex construction equipment to perform complex bridge maintenance work. Direct the work of a small crew engaged in a variety of bridge and structural repair and maintenance activities; train others in the operation of tools and equipment. Read, write and speak English at a level sufficient to give and follow oral and written instructions and to complete basic time and equipment records. Read and interpret blueprints and plans; follow grade stakes and calculate material quantities. Examples of Experience/Education/Training Any combination of training, education and/or experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities and required conditions of employment listed above is qualifying. An example of a way these requirements might be acquired is: Experience At least three years or more of experience performing duties equivalent to a Bridge Maintenance Worker in Monterey County. Additional Information CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT The required conditions of employment include, but are not limited to the following: Possess and maintain a valid California Class C driver’s license or the ability to provide suitable transportation that is approved by the appointing authority. Possess a valid California class A driver license, with tank endorsement at the time of hire. Be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and during times of disaster and/or emergency; and on call twenty-four (24) hours/day, seven (7) days/week. Use/wear appropriate safety clothing and equipment. Willingness to work suspended or on scaffolding high above ground or water level.
