A Planner - Long-Range Planning job is available with the City of Fort Worth FWLab. The FWLab is a new initiative commissioned by City Manager David Cooke in February 2023 in support of Fort Worth's organizational values and to make government better. The work undertaken by the FWLab advances the City's Vision to "be the most livable and best managed city in the country" through building organizational capacity to explore, analyze, and learn from data that is discoverable via existing and new municipal systems and components. Specific systems or components of the FWLab include long-range planning, comprehensive planning, target area planning, strategic infrastructure planning, return on public investment analysis, bond program coordination, priority-based budgeting, data analytics and management, operational assessments/internal consulting, strategic foresight or futurist studies, departmental strategic planning (FWStat), and Lean Six Sigma. The Planning Division prepares long-range and strategic plans for the city’s growth and development, while also serving as a key focal point for plan implementation. The Division prepares and updates the City’s Comprehensive Plan; conducts long-range planning for Transit-Oriented Development and other target urban areas; implements Fort Worth’s Urban Village Development Program; coordinates City implementation of the Trinity River Vision and Panther Island projects; and supports open space, watershed, public art, and other specific area planning and implementation, including urban design, form-based code development, and streetscape improvement projects. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Urban or Regional Planning, GIS, Urban Geography, Public Administration, Civil Engineering, or a related field. Two (2) years of experience in city planning with an emphasis on long-range planning. Valid Texas Driver’s License. Preferred Qualifications: Significant experience in long-range planning, including compelling work on municipal comprehensive plans, area plans, and/or urban design for walkable urban districts. Demonstrated knowledge of land use, environmental, and/or transportation planning, together with demographic and economic research methods and tools, data analytics, capital projects/CIP planning, and/or urban design. GIS and/or document design software skills with expertise in graphic document layout in Adobe Creative Suite and/or graphic design skills. Membership or certification from APA/AICP, GISP, CNU-A, or an equivalent professional organization is a plus. The Planner job responsibilities may include: Perform long-range and strategic planning tasks related to comprehensive and specific area planning including the collection, analysis, and presentation of relevant social, economic, and physical data essential to planning activities. Provide staff assistance to Senior Planners and management on departmental and planning policy issues. Represent the department in various settings, including meetings with other departments, external agencies, organizations, and community groups. Prepare, assess, and refine plans, along with crafting written reports with recommendations. Develop high-quality presentations that ensure the message is not only understood but leaves a lasting impact.
