GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION This class is the third level in a three level Program series. Incumbents are responsible for performing advanced journey, supervisory level duties in support of recreational programs and assisting department recreation staff with the development, implementation and evaluation of recreation programs for children, youth and adults (i.e., cultural arts, youth-adult sports, special interest classes, special events, and after school and summer programs) . This position also facilitates, supervises and participates in providing and presenting recreation programs and activities to the community and in organizing and implementing programs, planning activities and events, preparing facilities for scheduled functions, and supervising participants. Assures that safe and appropriate recreation facilities and programs, services and activities are provided and adhere to, ensuring safe environments for participants. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Works under general supervision of Department Recreation Staff SUPERVISION EXERCISED Supervises Program Aides, Program Assistants and volunteers. Provides guidance to Recreation Instructors as needed. Minimum Qualifications/Special Requirements EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Minimum of 18 years of age or older. Graduation from High School or GED equivalent One to three (1-3) years experience in developing and implementing recreation programs and working with youth and/or adult programs Some experience in facility and program oversight Some experience in leading and supervising staff OR Any combination of education, experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge and experience to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position. Maintains program accounting and administrative records; updates and maintains database of activity schedules, classes and special events; coordinates event schedules and reconciles schedule conflicts; maintains paperwork, registration forms and event calendars. Promotes good relationships with neighborhood and community groups and other agencies; may provide outreach functions with schools, community service groups, parents and general public to promote program activities and coordinate utilization of facilities. Plans, coordinates, and schedules activities and services for recreation programs and special events to provide recreational opportunities in a safe, fun, healthy, and inviting environment; recreation activities include sports and aquatics programs, athletic contests, sporting and outdoor recreation events, games, classes, youth enrichment programs, wellness classes, special adult programs, summer day camps, after-school programs and other programs and events. Maintains appropriate communication with school personnel, participant’s parents or guardians, and all other recreation staff members. Plans, organizes, schedules, facilitates, and evaluates recreation programs and activities in the area assigned. Supervises the distribution, care, use and maintenance of all supplies and equipment. Assists in set-up and take-down for events related to special events, classes, programs and activities. Responds to public inquiries about recreation programs made by phone, correspondence or during public meetings and explains program policies and procedures. Assists in the preparation of brochures, calendars, letters, posters, news releases and flyers, and related communications regarding recreation programs. Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as answering the phone, typing correspondence, running errands, picking up supplies, conducting children’s arts/crafts, making arrangements for rental and use of Parks and Recreation facilities, helping to set-up tables and chairs, transporting program participants, etc. Instructs participants in individual and group activities. Provides guidance, supervision, care and activities for various program participants and activities, maintains discipline, provides corrective counseling and consequences, enforces rules, and resolves disciplinary problems. Observes participants during program activities to monitor for safety and health standards. Inspects recreation equipment for proper working order and safety. Operates a motor vehicle requiring a standard Arizona Driver's License to travel to various work sites to perform assigned tasks based on department or seasonal needs, transport participants, equipment, supplies, and materials. Assists with organizing activities for recreational programs. Work may include: assisting with the planning, preparing and conducting of activities, games, crafts, field trips, and indoor/outdoor activities. Maintains appropriate discipline and program decorum. Greets customers and patrons, responds to inquiries and requests, and provides information, assistance or instruction regarding program policies, procedures, and activities. Responsible for maintain communication between staff and participants. Maintains order, safety and cleanliness of service areas and equipment by following procedures and enforcing operational rules and regulations. Performs basic cleaning and sanitizing of facilities and program areas. Observes all necessary precautions to secure the safety of participants. The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine is a nationally recognized and award-winning organization with 1,100 full-time/part time staff and a budget of $58 million. The Department oversees facilities and programs that reflect the needs and interests of a culturally diverse community, including: 170 parks with more than 3,200 acres devoted to open space and recreation, 27 community centers, 3 public pools, 6 miles of beaches, and 3 marinas. The Department provides free and fee-based recreational programs and leisure opportunities, both self-directed and organized, for people of all ages and cultures. Youth programs include free youth sports for ages 5 to 14 serving nearly 10,000 participants annually, summer and vacation day camps, 2,100 recreational and educational classes, sailing and aquatics instruction, teen center activities, skateboarding opportunities, and supervised after school and weekend activities at parks and schools. In addition, approximately 12,000 youth participate in non-Department sports leagues that utilize park facilities. Below are some of the programs offered: DAY CAMPS Our Day Camps offer various camp activities for kids ages 5 to 12. Camps vary in their offered activities and may specialize in activities such as sports or performance arts, while some may offer more traditional camp activities. All camp activities will follow current Health and Safety protocols in effect as per City of Long Beach Health Orders. Chaperoned field trips may be offered at all sites. All camps are fee-based and ensure no larger than a 10:1 ratio of campers to staff. SUMMER FUN The Summer Fun Days program is a free, drop-in program offered at multiple parks throughout the City. Kids ages 5 to 12 may participate in various activities including, sports, games, arts and crafts and minor excursions. All current safety and health protocols will be followed as per City of Long beach Health Orders. This 10-week summer program is offered Monday-Friday, from 12-5 p.m. from June to August. BE S.A.F.E. The "Be SAFE" (Summer Activities in a Friendly Environment) program offers extended supervision hours at designated parks during summer evenings. Activities include: arts and crafts, outdoor games, sports, science activities, dance programs, fitness classes, cooking, gardening and flower arranging, and computer labs for youth and families. This 10-week summer program is offered Monday-Friday, from 5-8 p.m. from June to August. Non-Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1,600 work hours available over a 12-month period and are considered temporary, at-will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits. This recruitment may be used to fill vacancies across various park locations and/or in additional programs. The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine is a nationally recognized and award-winning organization with 1,100 full-time/part time staff and a budget of $58 million. The Department oversees facilities and programs that reflect the needs and interests of a culturally diverse community, including: 170 parks with more than 3,200 acres devoted to open space and recreation, 27 community centers, 3 public pools, 6 miles of beaches, and 3 marinas. The Department provides free and fee-based recreational programs and leisure opportunities, both self-directed and organized, for people of all ages and cultures. Youth programs include free youth sports for ages 5 to 14 serving nearly 10,000 participants annually, summer and vacation day camps, 2,100 recreational and educational classes, sailing and aquatics instruction, teen center activities, skateboarding opportunities, and supervised after school and weekend activities at parks and schools. In addition, approximately 12,000 youth participate in non-Department sports leagues that utilize park facilities. Below are some of the programs offered: DAY CAMPS Our Day Camps offer various camp activities for kids ages 5 to 12. Camps vary in their offered activities and may specialize in activities such as sports or performance arts, while some may offer more traditional camp activities. All camp activities will follow current Health and Safety protocols in effect as per City of Long Beach Health Orders. Chaperoned field trips may be offered at all sites. All camps are fee-based and ensure no larger than a 10:1 ratio of campers to staff. SUMMER FUN The Summer Fun Days program is a free, drop-in program offered at multiple parks throughout the City. Kids ages 5 to 12 may participate in various activities including, sports, games, arts and crafts and minor excursions. All current safety and health protocols will be followed as per City of Long beach Health Orders. This 10-week summer program is offered Monday-Friday, from 12-5 p.m. from June to August. BE S.A.F.E. The "Be SAFE" (Summer Activities in a Friendly Environment) program offers extended supervision hours at designated parks during summer evenings. Activities include: arts and crafts, outdoor games, sports, science activities, dance programs, fitness classes, cooking, gardening and flower arranging, and computer labs for youth and families. This 10-week summer program is offered Monday-Friday, from 5-8 p.m. from June to August. Non-Career employees are allowed a maximum of 1,600 work hours available over a 12-month period and are considered temporary, at-will employees who are not typically eligible for benefits. However, non-career employees may qualify for health coverage and sick leave accruals subject to applicable federal and state provisions. The Backyard Explorers Day Camp is for children in kindergarten through 5th grade. It is located at Markham Nature Park at 3915 Cowell Road in Concord, CA. Staff training is offered at various dates and times between June 6 - June 9, 2024 Camp runs from June 10 - August 2, 2024 Work hours may vary between 6:45AM - 6:15PM The East Bay Explorers Day Camp is for youth 11 to 14 years old. It is located at Willow Pass Community Center at 2748 East Olivera Road in Concord, CA. Staff training is offered at various dates and times between June 6 - June 9, 2024 Camp runs from June 10 - August 2, 2024 Work hours may vary between 8:00AM - 6:00PM The Senior Day Trips Program: This program provides older adults ages 50 and better the opportunity to join day trips around the Bay Area. Transportation is provided from the Concord Senior Center, located at 2727 Parkside Circle. Trips are scheduled year-round beginning Spring 2024 Work hours may vary between 7:00 AM - 6:00 PM, weekdays and weekends, and typically do not exceed 8 hours per day/trip What you will be doing: Under supervision, both the Summer Day Camp Program Driver and Senior Trips Program Driver will provide non-emergency day transportation for participants and staff to various locations throughout the Bay Area. Drivers are required to complete pre and post-drive safety checks, comply with all traffic laws and City policy, participate in trainings and interact with staff, participants and their families in a professional and compassionate manner. The Recreation Program Driver position is part time, limited service. Hours may vary based on scheduled events. We are looking for someone who: Is experienced driving a 10-passenger van and a 30 passenger bus with a valid class A or B license with passenger endorsement. Can safely transport youth and teens while providing superior, friendly customer service and superb customer service skills. Has excellent communication skills, especially with seniors, parents, staff and vendors. Has excellent time management skills. Examples of duties include, but are not limited to Safely transport riders to and from assigned locations, while complying with any and all traffic laws and regulations, state laws and regulations, and City policies, procedures and best practices. Communicate with supervisor to receive and verify instructions. Report any delays. Implement safe and efficient operating of vehicle carrying up to 30 passengers. Conduct and log pre-trip and post-trip vehicle safety inspections. Safely and efficiently load and unload all passengers. Ensure that passengers are wearing their seat belts. Work cooperatively with program staff. Handle stressful situations calmly and professionally. Maintain an excellent attendance record. Maintain an impeccably clean vehicle. Complete monthly report to reconcile expenses for parking and other trip needs. Report participant, vehicle, or driver accidents/incidents in a timely manner, and accurately on the proper forms. Complete bi-weekly timecards in computerized system. Prompt and proper handling when vehicle maintenance issues arise. Qualifications Knowledge of: Routine vehicle maintenance requirements including hydraulic controls, hydraulic and hydraulic brake systems, and electronic ignition systems. Safe driving practices. Traffic laws of the State of California Principles and methods of preventive maintenance. Safe work practices and procedures. Ability to: Safely drive a transit size bus in a variety of weather conditions and locations. Push, pull, lift, bend/stoop, twist, squat, kneel for wheelchair loading, and sit for prolonged periods to drive. Must be able to work the maximum hours allowed under DOT Hours of Service Regulations on various shifts/days of the week, while maintaining outstanding attendance. Read, write and speak English sufficiently to converse with staff, campers and parents. Follow written and oral instructions. Maintain accurate records and reports. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships. Education: High school diploma or equivalent Experience: A minimum of one year of commercial driving experience preferred. Must have wheelchair lift loading experience. License/Certification: Must possess a valid Class A or B CDL with Passenger Endorsement for at least 30 passengers. Other Must be able to clear TB test and DOJ fingerprint clearance. A clean DMV driving history is a requirement of initial and continued employment. This position is a safety-sensitive position and will be subject to random DOT drug testing.
