Under supervision, and in a temporary/intermittent capacity, performs law enforcement duties to protect life and property and to preserve law and order, and performs related work as required.
The class of Deputy Sheriff (On-Call) is distinguished from the Deputy Sheriff class in that employees are hired as temporary replacements for regular Deputy Sheriffs who are absent due to vacation, sick leave, military duty, leave without pay, etc. or for periods of peak workload. Incumbents may perform the full range of duties; however, assignments are generally those considered more routine in nature. Assignments usually require immediate availability. Incumbents are assigned to temporary positions; no permanent appointments will be made to this class.

Graduation from high school or satisfactory completion of an acceptable General Education
Development (GED) test;
Either: 1. Possession of a State of California Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.)
Or: 2. Satisfactory completion of a P.O.S.T. Basic Academy.
Or: 3. Current enrollment in a P.O.S.T. Basic Academy.
NOTE : Applicants qualifying under pattern (1) must submit a copy of the P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate with the application. If a period of three years has elapsed since employment as a full-time peace officer in California, successful completion of the California Basic Course Equivalency Examination administered by P.O.S.T. will be required before employment.
Applicants qualifying under pattern (2) must submit a copy of a certificate of completion from
a P.O.S.T. Basic Academy with the application. If a period of three years has elapsed since
Academy graduation, successful completion of the California Basic Course Equivalency
Examination administered by P.O.S.T. will be required before employment.

current Academy enrollment. Satisfactory completion of the Academy will be required
The three year time period in (1) and (2) of the above patterns is computed from the last day of the last applicable full-time paid law enforcement employment and the date of appointment in this class.
Compliance with Government Code : In accordance with California Government Code, Section 1031, each employee shall meet the following minimum standards:
- Be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship. Any permanent resident alien shall be disqualified from holding a position if his or her application for citizenship is denied.
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Be fingerprinted for purposes of search of local, state, and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record. In addition, a classifiable set of fingerprints shall be furnished to the Department of Justice and to the Federal Bureau of Investigations.
- Be found to be free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition which might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer. For purposes of this section, a medical examination, including psychological screening, shall be required prior to appointment.
Criminal History and Background Check : The County may access criminal history information on candidates who have accepted a conditional offer of appointment for this class consistent with the provisions of Board of Supervisors' Resolution No. 82-602, Personnel Policies and Procedures B-5, and applicable federal and state laws. The County shall not consider for employment any candidate who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor that relates to or impacts the candidate's ability to perform the job duties of this class unless it is determined that mitigating circumstances exist. For purposes of accessing criminal history information, the candidate will be fingerprinted. A subsequent arrest notification may be obtained.
The County may also conduct a background check on the candidate prior to appointment to a position within this class. The background check may include personal and professional reference checks, credit history checks, Social Security Number verification, professional license/registration verification, military service information and driving history. Information obtained in the course of this background check will be considered by the appointing authority in the selection process. In obtaining such information, the County will comply with applicable consent and disclosure practices in the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the California Investigative Consumer Reporting Agencies Act.
The background check, including Computerized Voice Stress Analyzer (CVSA) examination, and psychological and physical examinations shall be conducted according to P.O.S.T. specifications. Pursuant to CA Government Code, Section 1029, the conviction of a felony is grounds for disqualification from an appointment except if the individual has been granted a full and unconditional pardon for the felony.
License Requirement : Possession of a valid California driver license, Class C or higher, is required prior to appointment to this class. Failure to maintain a valid license may constitute cause for personnel action. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Employees in this class who, as a part of their regularly assigned duties are required to operate a motor vehicle may be enrolled in the DMV Pull Notice Program.
Some assignments may require the possession of a Class B license or other endorsements. Employees in this class who are placed in safety-sensitive assignments will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing under County Policy J-7 Drug and Alcohol Testing Program.
Physical Requirements :Positions in this class require the incumbent to:
- Be able to meet medical standards as prescribed by P.O.S.T. and detailed in the P.O.S.T. Medical Screening Manual
- Possess sufficient physical ability to perform the full scope and functions of the job, including the ability to climb barriers, jump obstacles, and perform strenuous physical activities and control resisting subjects with a minimum of force necessary to effect an arrest.
Individuals who do not meet these requirements due to disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Working Conditions : Positions in this class require the incumbent to:
- Work various shifts to provide 24-7 coverage, including nights, weekends and holidays.
- Work in a detention facility and be in direct contact with inmates.
- Be potentially exposed to hazardous materials including bodily fluids.
- Work in hot or cold conditions for extended periods of time.
- Wear and maintain a designated Sheriff's Department uniform; including department issued safety equipment such as a duty/gun belt, ballistic vest, respirator, etc.

FORMULA RATE EXAMINATION (Weighted 100%)
All candidates meeting the minimum qualifications by the cut-off date will have their Supplemental Questionnaire scored in the Formula Rate Examination.
This examination will evaluate the relevance, level, recency, progression and quality of candidate's education, training and experience. The candidate's application or other materials will not be included in this examination. Therefore, the candidate's responses to the supplemental questionnaire should be thorough, detailed and complete. The score from the Formula Rate Examination will determine the ranking on the eligible/employment list for this job.
All candidates competing in the testing process will receive written notice of their examination results by email. Notices can also be accessed in their governmentjobs.com inbox.
