About the Opportunity
The Clerk-Recorder Department, Elections Division is seeking to fill part-time and extra-help vacancies to assist in preparing for each election and providing customer service to the public.The ideal candidate will have experience working as a poll worker, providing customer service, working with the public, and entering data using a computer.

The department has opened this recruitment in search for civic-minded individuals who can work at satellite offices. Elections satellite offices will be located throughout the County beginning the Saturday before Election Day through Election Day. Satellite offices are in-person voting locations like polling places but offer more services to voters. With satellite offices, voters can go to any location they choose to request a new ballot, register or re-register, and use ballot-marking devices. Extra-Help Election Clerks will be scheduled intermittently during peak workload periods, primarily the months before and after an election.

Training will include how to process voter records, properly issue ballots in the system and how to use the voting equipment. To prepare for an election, Extra-Help Election Clerks will assist in data entry, prepare for mailings, test voting equipment and gather supplies. Following Election Night, Extra-Help staff will assist in canvass, which includes processing vote by mail ballots, duplicating damaged ballots, and counting eligible provisional and conditional ballots, to name a few.

The Extra-Help Election Clerks performs a variety of typing and clerical tasks of average difficulty and/or warehouse duties under general supervision. This position requires basic computer skills, knowledge of departmental policies and procedures related to office operations. Judgment and initiative in making decisions in accordance with established guidelines is required. When handling any tasks, Extra-Help staff is required to maintain a professional image as an employee of Stanislaus County.

Part-time extra-help is a provisional classification where permanent status may not be obtained. This position is subject to overtime, standby, shift, and callback assignments and will perform related duties as assigned. This position is non-benefited except for participation in a 401a program with Nationwide.

Typical Tasks
  • Operate office equipment, (i.e., telephone, computer, copy machine);
  • Provide professional and accurate customer service in person and over the phone;
  • Set up and assist voters with voting equipment;
  • Perform data entry and information retrieval;
  • Follow oral and written instructions;
  • File documents accurately;
  • Explain routine policy and procedures to the general public;
  • Assemble packets and / or boxes of election materials;
  • Prepare election equipment for distribution to election officers;
  • Inventory supplies; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Skills, Ability, Knowledge, Education/Experience)
  • Deal with the public in a tactful and courteous manner;
  • Use a computer keyboard proficiently;
  • Accurately perform a wide variety of keyboarding and general clerical duties of average difficulty;
  • Perform data entry and information retrieval;
  • Follow oral and written instructions;
  • Sit at desk for extended amounts of time;
  • Lift, bend, stoop and reach overhead; and
  • Travel to various sites within the county .

  • Alphabetic and numeric filing procedures;
  • Modern office procedures and equipment; and
  • Proper usage of English grammar and punctuation.
