Job Description and Duties LABORER (PERMANENT INTERMITTENT) - DISTRICT FACILITIES MANAGEMENT / McCLELLAN The reporting location for this position is 4940 Lang Avenue in McClellan, CA. This position will work under the supervision of Park Maintenance Chief II. The Laborer is required to work in park units throughout the state, as assigned and based on operational need. The Laborer will perform heavy manual labor, work with hand and power tools, perform miscellaneous unskilled tasks, perform rough repair work, maintain drainage structures. This position will frequently work from remote locations to efficiently complete task assignments; will require to work nights, weekends and odd hours and overtime in accomplishment of assigned tasks. This position will also spike camp at work sites outside throughout the State. This position requires a valid Class C driver’s license. OVERVIEW About the Program! The Public Works Summer Employment Program positions are distinguished from regular Kitsap County classified positions by the temporary work assignment and training provided to the participants. The training provided for up to four summers allows participants to progress from entry level to more skilled duties and responsibilities, depending upon assignment, years of participation and training progress. Work is performed under immediate supervision and the participants are expected to learn tasks and to carry out assignments as directed. An evaluation completed by the worker's supervisor assists with determining eligibility to continue to return for summer employment in the following years. The summer worker is evaluated on: ability to work without constant supervision, willingness to perform assigned tasks, punctuality and dependability, self-motivation, safety habits, ability to get along with co-workers and supervisors, and contribution to the County program assigned. OVERVIEW About the Program! The Public Works Summer Employment Program positions are distinguished from regular Kitsap County classified positions by the temporary work assignment and training provided to the participants. The training provided for up to four summers allows participants to progress from entry level to more skilled duties and responsibilities, depending upon assignment, years of participation and training progress. Work is performed under immediate supervision and the participants are expected to learn tasks and to carry out assignments as directed. An evaluation completed by the worker's supervisor assists with determining eligibility to continue to return for summer employment in the following years. The summer worker is evaluated on: ability to work without constant supervision, willingness to perform assigned tasks, punctuality and dependability, self-motivation, safety habits, ability to get along with co-workers and supervisors, and contribution to the County program assigned. In the on-line multiple-choice test, the following competencies may be evaluated: Reading Comprehension; Mechanical Aptitude; Interpersonal Skills; Equipment Operation, including knowledge of: California Department of Motor Vehicle Code (DMV) concerning the operation of Class B vehicles; Motor Vehicle Code and special maintenance procedures for various vehicles; Safety Focus, including knowledge of: Cal/OSHA regulations regarding the use of personal protective equipment (PPE); safety equipment, emergency equipment, and first aid supplies that conform to Cal/OSHA rules and regulations; personal and specialized safety equipment required for working in confined spaces; Job Knowledge, including knowledge of: the use of various hand tools; common defects in equipment sufficient to identify the needs for repair; common sewer problems encountered in the field sufficient to correct the defects; potential storm drain problems sufficient to detect and correct issues; and other necessary skills, knowledge, and abilities. Candidates invited to participate in the on-line multiple-choice test will be able to take the test as instructed from a remote location using a computer with a webcam and a reliable internet connection.
