Job Description and Duties LIFEGUARD II (SEASONAL) - BAY AREA DISTRICT / SAN FRANCISCO BAY SECTOR Priority consideration will be given to any person receiving State public assistance under the CalWORKS program. Applicants who receive State public assistance need to identify their status as a CalWORKS recipient in the comments area on the application. Applicants must submit a verification of their CalWORKS eligibility status, which may include the most recent Notice of Action showing TANF eligibility or a copy of your last aid check stub. This position works under the supervision of the State Park Peace Officer Supervisor (Ranger or Lifeguard). The reporting location is Angel Island State Park. Primary responsibilities include performing first aid and CPR as needed, detecting and rescuing persons or vessels in distress, educating visitors about rules and regulations, providing daily leadership for the Lifeguard I (Seasonal) staff and working as a deckhand on State Park vessels, with an emphasis on assisting peace officers with a wide variety of medical emergencies. This position works as a crew member on State Park vessels as a deckhand. Pre-employment and random drug testing is a U.S. Coast Guard requirement. Time worked as a deckhand can count toward boat operator licensure. This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience toward a career as a licensed boat operator, and offers the opportunity to build a base of knowledge for becoming a rescue boat operator at another unit in the future. Training opportunities to improve knowledge, skills and abilities may be offered. This is a uniformed position, and the employee must abide by all applicable departmental uniform and grooming standards. This position may be up to full-time from May through September and part-time other times of the year. Under the direction of the Wildfire Program Coordinator, the Wildland Firefighter position will assist with wildfire suppression, management, and control. This seasonal position will also have duties involving fuels reduction activities, prescribed burning, fire prevention, patrol, and detection. The approximate dates of employment are from June 3 - December 2, 2024. Total hours worked are not to exceed 1,500 annually. The work schedule for this position is 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday with ability to work other hours as needed. Weekend days and holidays may be required. Salary Information for this position is $22.00 - $28.00 per hour, dependent upon qualifications and experience. Position will close to applicants on: April 26, 2024 at 12 noon M.S.T . Specifically, this position: Engages in fighting range, forest, and other national fire assignments Participates in forest restoration operations, including fuels mitigation and prescribed fires Suppresses and extinguishes wildland fires Performs fire prevention, forest restoration, and hazard fuels mitigation activities Assists with prescribed fire planning and implementation The Wildland Firefighter must have the ability to: Learn fire suppression operations and the use of emergency equipment. Under the direction of the Wildfire Program Coordinator, the Wildland Firefighter position will assist with wildfire suppression, management, and control. This seasonal position will also have duties involving fuels reduction activities, prescribed burning, fire prevention, patrol, and detection. The approximate dates of employment are from June 3 - December 2, 2024. Total hours worked are not to exceed 1,500 annually. The work schedule for this position is 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday with ability to work other hours as needed. Weekend days and holidays may be required. Specifically, this position: Engages in fighting range, forest, and other national fire assignments Participates in forest restoration operations, including fuels mitigation and prescribed fires Suppresses and extinguishes wildland fires Performs fire prevention, forest restoration, and hazard fuels mitigation activities Assists with prescribed fire planning and implementation The Wildland Firefighter must have the ability to: Learn fire suppression operations and the use of emergency equipment. Learn and apply standard wildland firefighting, emergency aid, hazardous materials, and fire prevention techniques. Perform strenuous or peak physical activities during emergency, training, or station maintenance activities for prolonged periods of time under extreme conditions such as heights, intense heat, cold, or smoke.
