About Our Job
Our Recreation Division operates 30 recreation centers offering affordable facilities, programs and activities to residents and visitors year-round. To learn more about Denver Recreation please visit

The City and County of Denver's Department of Recreation is seeking Recreation Management Interns to join our team to gain experience in a recreation setting with facility management and program planning.

Students will be required to work the full amount of hours in order to fulfill the credited hours of the college or university (typically 480 hrs.). Center hours vary, which may require working different shifts including night, weekends, and holidays. Applicants must be willing to work a flexible schedule.

As an intern, you will have the opportunity to experience the following:
  • leadership and organizational skills in a recreational setting while assisting with supervision and administrative functions; gaining exposure to the following:
    • Facility operations
    • Staff scheduling and
    • Staff development
    • Budget planning and other administrative operations
    • Program planning processes for core program areas
    • Learning and adhering to customer service expectations, both internally and externally
  • Develop and refine communication skills and problem-solving skills through direct participation and contact with the general public
  • Community outreach to further public relations for Denver Parks and Recreation
  • Create personal goals and objectives for your internship
  • Assist with specific programs and special events as assigned:
  • Assist with budgeting, cost analysis, and purchases
  • Assist with program planning and promotion
  • Attendance to all relevant staff in-services

This is an unpaid internship
About You
Our ideal candidate will have/be:
  • A current Junior or Senior currently seeking a bachelor's degree in Recreation Management, Leisure Studies, Sports Management, Hospitality and Tourism, Business or directly related
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Great attention to detail
  • Customer service skills
  • General knowledge of a variety of recreation programs
  • Ability to instruct and lead group activities
  • Ability to follow oral, written and demonstrated instructions
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with other employees, participants and the public
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative and willingness to learn

  • Education Requirement: Current enrollment in an accredited college program leading to a certificate, licensure, associates, bachelor's, or higher degree in, or a recent graduate (completed specified program within 1 year of completion)
  • Experience Requirement: None
  • Education and Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted
