Under supervision, makes computations and prepares or updates drawings, as-builts, maps or charts of streets, harbor areas, structures, sewers, storm drains, gas, water and other utility plans utilizing CADD (Computer Aided Design and Drafting), GIS (Geographic Information Systems), and/or other database systems; makes trigonometric and other mathematical calculations; reads and interprets engineering sketches, maps, survey field notes, aerial photographs and drawings of electrical and mechanical systems; performs substructure studies; may assist in preparing cost estimates and analyzes material costs, quality, and quantity; may conduct plan checks for compliance with City standards, regulations and non-interference with utilities; may interact with the public in response to service requests; may assist engineers with design software such as Civil 3D, InRoads, or Bluebeam; may participate in pipeline compliance-related activities; makes field investigations to verify planned work; maintains various logs, records, and files; assists in preparing City Council items; performs other related duties as required.REQUIREMENTS TO FILE
Applicants must meet one
of the following four requirements:
A. Bachelor's degree in Engineering, CAD Drafting, Geographic Information Systems, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university (proof required)*OR
B.Six units of college level coursework in Engineering, CAD Drafting, Geographic Information Systems, or a closely related field (proof required)* and one year of paid, full-time equivalent experience in civil or other engineering related work using AutoCAD, MicroStation, or other design software.OR
C.Completion of a certificate or equivalent program in Engineering, CAD Drafting, Geographic Information Systems, or a closely related field (proof required)* and one year of paid, full-time equivalent experience in civil or other engineering related work using AutoCAD, MicroStation, or other design software.OR
D. Two years of paid, full-time equivalent experience in civil or other engineering related work, which must include one year of using AutoCAD, MicroStation, or other design software.*Required documents, such as transcripts, degrees, and/or certificates must be uploaded to the application at the time of filing. Any proofs submitted must contain either the applicant's name or other identifying characteristic on the form. Degree must indicate the field of study and transcripts must indicate field of study and degree conferred date. Candidates who possess degrees from colleges or universities from outside the United States must attach proof of educational equivalency at the time of filing.Additional Requirements to File:

- A valid motor vehicle operator's license and current DMV driving record must be submitted to the hiring department at the time of selection.
Experience in underground utilities, such as natural gas and water systems and/or pipelines; experience in Civil Engineering practice; knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as it relates to construction plans and drawings; knowledge of City of Long Beach standard plans, City of Los Angeles standard plans, Caltrans standard plans, or Standard Specifications for Public Works Construction (Greenbook); experience using various related computer programs and/or systems, including ArcGIS, InRoads, Microstation, ProjectWise, AutoCAD/Civil 3D, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Excel, Word, Access, Outlook, and PowerPoint.SELECTION PROCEDUREEXAMINATION WEIGHTS:
A minimum rating of 70 must be attained in each part of the examination in order to be placed on the eligible list. Certification by score bands will be considered based on an analysis of test scores. The resulting eligible list will remain in effect for one year, but may be extended.
