DESCRIPTION The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine is a nationally recognized and award-winning organization with 1,100 full-time/part-time staff and a budget of $58 million. The Department oversees facilities and programs that reflect the needs and interests of a culturally diverse community, including: Approximately 170 parks with more than 3,200 acres devoted to open space and recreation, 27 community centers, 3 public pools, 6 miles of beaches, and 3 marinas. The purpose of the Community Engagement and Partnerships Bureau, is to create a strong focus on engagement and partnerships that supplement park/recreation programs, park planning and projects for the Long Beach community; develop new grant and revenue for programs, projects or maintenance; and manage partnership relationships, contracts and agreements. The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine, Beach and Queensway Bay Maintenance Division, has an immediate opening for a Maintenance Assistant II (NC) position. This is an unclassified, non-career position. Unclassified positions with the City do not require applying through the Civil Service process. All communication will be handled through the department. Non-career employees are not typically eligible for health/dental/vision benefits; however, may be eligible for sick leave benefits. Scheduled hours may vary by week on an as-needed basis. The successful candidate may work up to 28 hours per week, not to exceed 1,600 work hours per service year. Non-career employees are not guaranteed a minimum number of work hours. This is an at-will, seasonal, part-time position. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Daily trash removal and cleaning; Graffiti abatement & painting; Sweep and use mechanical blower on public beach access paths; Operate various light to medium vehicles, vessels and equipment (e.g., utility truck with trailer, small sidewalk [Tennant] floor sweeper, golf carts, Rainbow Harbor trash skimmer vessel) Operate manual and mechanical tools within a marine environment; Perform routine maintenance and landscape duties; Report hazardous conditions; Drive City vehicle to various facilities; Perform other related duties as required. REQUIREMENTS TO FILE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Must be at least 18 years of age; Valid Motor Vehicle Operator license; Capable of lifting a minimum of 50 pounds regularly, and 75 pounds occasionally with or without assistance. Willingness to work outside in all kinds of weather, as well as all shifts, including weekends and holidays. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Six (6) months of experience interacting with the public in a customer service setting is desirable; One (1) year of professional maintenance experience is desirable; Additional years of professional maintenance experience is highly desirable; Experience working in a marine environment and on the waterways is desirable; Experience with graffiti abatement and painting is desirable; Experience with carpentry and/or masonry is desirable.
