About Our Job
Denver Human Services provides assistance, benefits and protection and prevention services to one in three Denver residents. Assistance programs include food, cash and medical benefits, child care, child support, employment first, veterans' services and general assistance for eligible Denver residents. Protection & Prevention services are provided via child, youth and adult protection, along with community-focused programming, including in-home services, designed to strengthen families and prevent future occurrences of abuse or neglect.

Denver Human Services (DHS) is currently seeking individuals to fill 3-4 GIVE DENVER COMMUNITY RESOURCE NAVIGATOR INTERNSHIP positions for the GIVE Denver program for the spring of 2020.

The GIVE Denver program operates a resource center (GIVE Center) that connects individuals and families with vital community-based resources, vital document fee waivers, clothing and eyeglass voucher referrals, emergency diapers and pet food, and operates a monthly personal hygiene program. The center serves a very diverse population including those experiencing homelessness, those experiencing trauma, and living in crisis situations. This is a unique opportunity to develop de-escalation skills and practice motivational interviewing techniques in a guided learning environment. This is a frontline customer facing position.

The Internship is intended for college students who are exploring career fields and/or whose degree requires an internship. These follow the academic calendar with Fall (Early August-Early December), Spring (Early January-Early May), and Summer (Late May- Early August) semesters. Interns can choose to stay longer with supervisor approval. Interns are encouraged to stay on as volunteers following their internships. Academic fields required for participants in the study areas of Social Work and Human Services.

GIVE Center Hours
Monday-Thursday 9-3 pm (Hours Change Based on Center Coverage/Holidays)

*Intern Shifts Available are 8-4 pm or 12-4 pm

As an intern, you will be responsible for:
  • Milieu Support: Greeting, directing, and assisting customers with intake forms, building services navigation, and occasional de-escalation of situational conflict
  • Working knowledge of current GIVE Denver community resources and partner with GIVE Outreach Case Coordinators to identify gaps and areas for collaboration within the Denver community
  • Assess and identify customers' needs and connect them with the corresponding community-based service providers
  • Support relationships with community organizations that partner with DHS and GIVE Denver
  • Support program fundraising efforts
  • Internal/External agency tours and job shadowing as designated by the GIVE Operation's Coordinator/Field Instructor
  • Identify areas outside of GIVE Denver for shadowing opportunities or additional opportunities training with GIVE Denver Operation's Coordinator's approval
  • Tracking Hours Monthly & Reporting to them to the Administrative Support III for GIVE Center Data Analysis


This is an unpaid internship
About You
Our ideal candidate will have/be:
  • Completion of six (6) credit hours leading to a bachelors degree in Human Services and or Social Work
  • Able to commit to a minimum of a 3 months
  • Commit to at least 8 hours per week
  • Possess good communication skills and pleasant personality
  • Ability to follow directions under general supervision and/or independently
  • Have an interest in assisting our customers to self-empowerment through guided next steps
  • Demonstrate empathy & excellent customer service
  • Demonstrate ability to practice cultural competence while in a service role
  • Experience handling conflict resolution & challenging situations
  • Ability to adapt to different environments & people from all walks of life
  • Demonstrate excellent teamwork and be willing to be flexible will scheduling
  • Display strong boundary setting skills
