San Mateo Medical Center'sFair Oaks Health Center in Redwood Cityis currently seeking aCharge Nurse,who is looking for an exciting opportunity to help provide quality care in our Health Center's OB/GYN clinic, including the Comprehensive Perinatal Services Program, the Optometry Clinic, Wellness Clinic and distribution center.

San Mateo County Health operates a 509-bed integrated care facility, and 12 outpatient clinics, and has been providing healthcare to our community and surrounding service area since 1930.

TheCharge Nurse, in collaboration with the clinic manager, directs nursing care, coordinates resources for their clinic and performs administrative activities, while providing leadership and support to staff. The Charge Nurse provides quality care to patients in compliance with prescribed standards and participates as member of the clinic management team in the development and implementation of clinic goals, interfacingwith the supervising physician and clinic manager for short-term problem solving.

The Charge Nurse assesses, evaluates and directs nursing activities to provide quality care to patients in compliance with prescribed standards. This position supervises licensed and non-licensed staff in the OB/GYN clinic including the Comprehensive Perinatal Services Program, the Optometry Clinic, Wellness Clinic and distribution center. The position also provides nursing back up to laboratory services on site. The Charge Nurse ensures adequate staffing in all areas and cross trains staff as appropriate. The Charge Nurse also interviews candidates for positions and completes performance evaluations. The position participates in the training and disciplinary counseling of staff.

Theideal candidatehas outpatient nursing experience and at least one year of supervisory experience. The ideal candidate is alsoexperiencedinproviding education and updates to staff, as well as inscheduling for multiple shifts, and has excellent communication skills. Knowledge of quality improvement processes and community health systems is strongly preferred.The ideal candidatehas also worked with the underserved population;and is bilingual in Spanish and English.Computer literacy, prior experience withelectronic medical records and registries is preferred.

Examples Of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Assess, evaluate and direct nursing activities on an assigned shift to provide quality care to patients in compliance with prescribed standards and in conjunction with nursing management.
  • Supervise and perform nursing assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation and documentation of patient care on the unit.
  • Work in conjunction with nursing management to coordinate adequate unit staffing for the assigned shift.
  • Participate with unit or clinic nursing management in interviewing, hiring, completing evaluations and performing disciplinary counseling of staff.
  • Supervise the work of professional and paraprofessional nursing staff.
  • Work with nursing management to identify staff development needs and to implement continuing education programs.
  • Assist nursing management in planning unit or clinic budget.
  • Interpret policies and procedures to nursing staff.
  • Participate in staff meetings.
  • Coordinate with ancillary support departments to coordinate total patient care.
  • Maintain and evaluate records.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

  • Possession of a California license as a Registered Nurse.
  • Possession and maintenance of BLS certification.

Knowledge of:
  • Nurse Practice Act and professional and governmental standards or regulations pertaining to nursing.
  • Nursing theories, principles, methods and practices.
  • Safety and infection control principles.
  • Clinical systems, supplies and equipment.
  • Principles of staff development.
  • Supervisory principles.

  • Prepare reports and maintain accurate records.

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.
