LOCATION:
ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT, STRUCTURAL, ARCHITECTURAL & GEOTECHNICAL DESIGN SECTION, JOINT ADMINISTRATION OFFICE, WHITTIER

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
To use Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) equipment to perform moderate to difficult conceptual design layouts and to prepare and maintain construction plans and engineering-related drawings, databases, models and sketches

JOB SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of a Supervising Designer and the technical direction of Project Designers and Engineers, the incumbent operates CAD Microstation software to produce and edit 2D and 3D structural engineering and architectural plans, sections, elevations, schedules and other views for Districts facilities; modifies drawings and 3D models to incorporate design changes; solve mathematical problems to accurately complete the drawings; assists the engineers in site investigations and creates field sketches of as-built conditions; and performs various technical drafting functions as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must possess a valid California Class C driver license - AND - For DESIGNER I three years of experience performing duties equivalent to a Drafting Technician III; coursework from an accredited college or university in Engineering Design Drafting, or a closely related field may be substituted for the required experience on a year for year basis. For DESIGNER II, one year of Districts' experience performing the duties of a Designer I - OR - Two years of outside experience performing journey level design work.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Five years of verifiable experience creating Microstation 2D plans & 3D models. Familiar with building codes and standards. Five years of experience in preparing structural and architectural contract drawings, creating field sketches and coordinating with other disciplines.

EXAMPLES OF ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

The competitive selection process may cover for the DESIGNER I level, a knowledge of : Basic engineering principles; principles and uses of algebra, geometry, trigonometry and technical drawing; nomenclature, symbols, techniques and instruments used in engineering design and drafting; construction practices and materials; basic knowledge of building and engineering codes; CAD systems. The ability to : Perform difficult drafting work and basic conceptual design layout for structural and architectural engineering design projects; make technical calculations; translate verbal ideas and sketches into preliminary through final drawings. For the DESIGNER II level, a knowledge of : Principles of engineering design; techniques, methods and equipment used in specialized design and layout; principles of structural and architectural systems; principles of landfills, sewer systems and treatment plant construction; engineering mathematics; building and engineering codes; CAD systems. The ability to : Design and layout a segment of a complex structural engineering project from conceptualization to final stage; translate verbal ideas and sketches into completed engineering plans and contract drawings.

SELECTION PROCESS:
