Current employees in the unclassified service who meet the following criteria also qualify to participate in this exam:
- Unclassified employees who have attained permanent County status on a classified position by successful completion of the initial probationary period, with no break in service since leaving the classified service. OR Full-time employees in the unclassified service with at least six months of full-time experience in the unclassified service by the last day of filing.
Permanent employees who have completed their initial probationary period and hold a qualifying payroll title may file for this examination if they are within six months of meeting the experience requirements by the last day of filing. However, the names of such employees will beWITHHELD

Performs highly specialized clerical work in the Custody Services Division of the Sheriff's Department.CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS
Positions allocable to this class perform highly specialized clerical work in the Custody Services Division of the Sheriff's Department.
Essential Job Functions
Receives and checks for accuracy court papers on inmates; contacts courts to correct errors or clarify vague or incomplete documents; records action required by orders for inmate history records.
Receives and reviews court release orders; verifies that orders are valid, issued by the appropriate court and not in conflict with orders from a higher court; determines which charge or charges are covered by court orders and checks for unsatisfied supplemental bookings or holds; records release information on history records and prepares files for review by releasing officer.
Processes paperwork on inmates being transferred to other correctional facilities; transmits information concerning changes in inmate status, sentence and related matters to the appropriate outlying jail facility.
Computes inmates' sentences in view of the type of commitment or commitments and allowances for good behavior and work time; revises sentences necessitated by amended or additional commitments, payment of fines and changes of inmate status.
Screens and routes telephone calls; furnishes information to the courts and appropriate law enforcement personnel in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures regarding release of confidential information.
Enters and retrieves online confidential law enforcement information; sends messages over local, state and national computerized law enforcement data systems by computer terminal or teletype machine; ensures information is complete, selects appropriate information and system to use, and codes and decodes information and composes messages in accordance with rules and regulations governing each data system.
Prepares routine correspondence to various courts, counties, police agencies and correctional institutions.
Occasionally assists in the supervision of the unit and/or advise other employees on technical questions regarding inmate records, as required.
Requirements SELECTION REQUIREMENTS OPTION I:
One year experience as a
Custody Records Clerk I, Sheriff,* in the service of the County of Los Angeles. OPTION II:
One year highly specialized clerical experience as a
Senior Typist Clerk* in the service of the County of Los Angeles processing a variety of legal documents in the Sheriff's Department, Custody Services Division. OPTION III:
Three years specialized clerical experience as an
Intermediate Typist Clerk* in the service of the County of Los Angeles, one year of which must have been in the Sheriff's Department, Custody Services Division processing inmate custody records.TYPEWRITING SKILL
Ability to type at the rate of30 net words per minute.LICENSE
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.PHYSICAL CLASS
