Job Description

Psychiatric Nurses provide professional nursing care to individuals with developmental delays, developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities or social, emotional and/or behavioral disorders, in an institution or out-patient setting in accordance with the authorized scope of practice specified in the Nurse Practice Act. Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training. The Psychiatric Nurse II works under the supervision of the Psychologist 2 and will consult with them on a regular basis. They will communicate plans with team members by attending nursing meetings and sharing with other team members; assist with team responsibilities and assignments as necessary; use patient problems to plan patient care addressing chief presenting problems incorporating the plan of nursing care into the multidisciplinary treatment plan; collect/document the medical/mental health conditions of patients using appropriate charting protocols; complete health assessments; collect statistical date, tracking current outpatient medications and patient outcome; review inmates to determine need for referrals or assessment; and observe all safety practices at all times. Incumbents will be working directly with Mental Health inmates to carry out nursing care assignments, promote optimal health and patient independence, document problems requiring nursing interventions, document patient teaching needs and discharge planning, communicate care plans to other nurses to maintain continuity of care.
