Positions allocable to this class have charge, without technical supervision, of all landscape and grounds maintenance work at a County institution with more than 100 acres of land under cultivation within the Sheriff's DepartmentCorrectional Facilities.CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS
Positions allocable to this class generally report to a facility Sergeant at a Sheriff's correctional facility or the Facilities Operations Manager within the Sheriff's Department Correctional Facilities. Incumbents are responsible for assigning and directing the work crews engaged in the performance of landscape maintenance. Incumbents are distinguished by their responsibility without technical supervision, for comprehensive landscape duties at County institutions and by their direct interaction with work groups comprised of inmates and/or community service workers in the Sheriff's Department or resident volunteer helpers at the Sheriff's Department Correctional Facilities. Incumbents must possess extensive knowledge of landscape management and maintenance programs, pesticide and herbicide application techniques and interpersonal and tactical communication skills required to effectively direct assigned work crews and provided conflict resolution, as needed. Incumbents in this class usually perform moderate physical tasks outdoors involving bending, stooping, and lifting the performance of their duties.
Essential Job Functions
Plans, assigns, and supervises all landscape and grounds maintenance work. Includes: planting, fertilizing, pruning, spraying, mowing, plant propagating, lawn renovating, irrigating, sandbagging, weed eradicating, cleaning of grounds, and ranking leveling of slopes.
Directs and monitors the operations of work crews engaged in a variety of landscape and grounds maintenance projects on County grounds and facilities.
Trains and provides orientation to work crews in the proper and safe use of handling tools, equipment, and materials, and in proper and safe work procedures and habits.
Operates a two-way radio to monitor crew locations, communicate with and/or seek assistance from law enforcement personnel.
Devises new and improves existing work procedures, and develops and implements landscape plans for unimproved areas.
Responsible for soil conservation activities and the construction of drainage ditches, tree maintenance and clearance and the care and maintenance of gardening tools and equipment.
Orders and maintains adequate inventories of gardening tools, supplies, and equipment.
Keeps work records and prepares reports regarding landscape and grounds maintenance activities.
Participate or assist in obtaining specialized landscape service contracts from private vendors, including participating in the bidding process, negotiations, renewal, and review, as required.
Drives a truck or van to transport crews to and from work sites; may operate tractors or mowing equipment.
Provide technical direction in the safe and effective application of restricted and non-restricted pesticides and/or herbicides to workers performing chemical spray activities, as required.
Prepare and apply chemical pesticides and/or herbicides or may assist in the preparation and application of these chemicals using high pressure power driven spray equipment, and is responsible for the safe storage and use of such chemicals in conformance with regulations of the Environmental Protection Agency and State Department of Agriculture, as required
Provide safety training to chemical applicators and others associated with chemical applicators, as required.
Requirements MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSOPTION A:

**In county service experienceat the level
of Senior Grounds Maintenance Worker is defined as one who supervises and participates in the work of a crew from four to ten positions performing gardening, grounds maintenance, and building custodial work.
